Had a giggle at todays email YBW newsletter -

Five seamen have been injured after their vessel collided with a wind turbine in Force 5 "gales". in an incident long feared by yachtsmen.

They weren't yachtmen they were a wind turbine service ship "oops!"

Weather conditions in the area were winds of Force 5 with a one metre swell.

I agree Tomohawk. the 'feared collision' would be a vessel crashing into a turbine tower whilst navigating in the area, NOT a mishap associated with the guys working on the tower. an absolute beat up.

As a general part of the wind farm debate.... This type of accident is inevitable... Transfering from boats to the turbines is dangerous...

Of course they are only being built offshore because screaming NIMBYS kick up such a fuss if anyone proposes a wind farm on land... Indeed dylan was using this very forum trying to drum up support for opposition to power cables... Imagine how he would react if they actually put peoples lives before neighbour sensitivity..

I can think of more fun things to 'service' than a wind turbine, I mean how the heck do you mount it in the first place?!

Not sure about "long feared by yachtsmen" but it is certain that, sooner or later, ships will knock a few over.

I doubt if anyone will miss them much.

Unclear about Nuclear ?

Five people injured.......So..... will this accident be logged against all of the other other personal accidents involving Nuclear and other sources of energy over the last 12mths ??....

makes Nuclear's safety record over the past 12 mths look quite good really ?

I'm choosing to ignore the Fukushima Dai-ichi incident in Japan as , I think, no one was killed or injured directly as a result of the plant malfunctioning...any injuries recorded were as a result of the Earthquake and resulting Tsunami...I may be wrong ...but in any case it has taken an extraordinary natural event to cause the problem in the first palce.....

I will always hate wind farms.....just for the look of 'em.
