At 30 qtuid it might be worth buying and loading onto you PC to se what you feel about them yourself. I tried MM years ago with a PDA, I didnt like the setup, but that was the PDA not the MM. we used the MM road map to drive to the SoF 7 years ago, gps reciever on the dashboard and a hot (so she tells me) lap top on SWMBOs, lap.

If you do decide to get one, let me know, I still have the gps reciever in a draw you can have, just owe me a drink next time we meet up.

I have memory map UKHO maps on my iPad/ iPhone. They're excellent. The app is OK, different functionality from the likes of Navionics, partly because its raster charts rather than vector, but I like having access to raster. The MM app can be a bit of a faff to begin with (the instructions not entirely clear) but perseverance is worthwhile. If you going to buy an iPad to use these, make sure it's the 3G version which contains a GPS/GLONASS chip (the cheaper wifi-only one does not have this chip, see threads passim ad nauseam). If you sail in Scotland then another reason to have satnav-enabled iPad with memory map on it is the excellent Antares charts - surveys, by (very proficient) amateurs, of lots of interesting little and rocky corners of the W coast and islands - great for finding your way into secluded anchorages.

Stephen,

Being Mac through and through, I don't have a PC, so would need to buy either that or an iPad. Must say, I lean towards a pad.

Another vote for MM. Use it on both PC and iPad. Nice and simple as not vector charts. Also works seamlessly with the Antares charts if you are visiting Scotland. They do the same good deal with OS maps too which works on the same app seamlessly with the charts.

I bought them about 3 years ago. Great to have all the charts available; I keep them on my laptop which I also use at home. Surprising how often I refer to them in the context of threads on this forum.

They won't work in OpenCPN but have their own ultra-simple chart plotter in which you can enter waypoints and routes and show current position via a link to a GPS (in my case Garmin 128). I haven't managed to upload routes to the GPS because of lack of flexibility on baud rates.

Having said that, you can buy the same thing in a format accessible to OpenCPN here: http://www.visitmyharbour.com/charts-for-opencpn.asp

I've been using MM for the last 10 years or more. I have it on the PC at home and on a PDA and a phone. Wife has now got a Hudl so I may load it on that too.
As a visual view of where you are and where you are going it's great. We use it with OS maps for walking and some old Maptech admiralty charts for sailing the south coast.
I enjoy checking over the tracks of past sailing/walking trips on the home computer, we've now got about 10 years worth.

What do you get for your £30 quid?

A single download or a download with updates?

According to MM you get a single download; an upgrade is usually £30, however Antares advise that if you buy MM charts in winter you get that years edition half price (£25). Since the sea is still rising relatively slowly, one (or five) year old charts will meet my needs. I do renew my Meridian package every year but that is because I am far too lazy to calculate live tidal streams and heights when I can get them by just looking at the screen. (Meridian with Admiralty raster charts and tides on my laptop, MM/ Antares (anchorage details) on the wifes tablet, so plenty of scope for argument!)

I too have used them for ten years on a laptop on the boat and pc at home. I have a usb gps on the laptop and this works really well as a complete secondary system to the e95 at the helm. I use the mm charts for all the serious work.

If you are down for the berth holders party this weekend, pop aboard and you can see for yourself if you like

Strudders,

Many thanks. We're away this weekend, but another time maybe?

if you get MM online download all maps for that year because if you want a different chart without paying for yearly update it will not be online
best to order hard copy

I have PC and mobile licence and use it on I pad I think its very good value for money

Has anybody tried the AIS upgrade for Memory Map? Is it any good?

Also it is difficult to work out how much this costs. Looks like it needs a Professional version upgrade, at 125USD (or perhaps 225USD, not clear which).
Are there any other features to make the extra spend worthwhile ?
