I know that this has come up before but cannot find what I am seeking.

We are thinking of getting a memory foam topper for the berth in the boat. What is the forums experience of these. I am looking for advice as to thickness, foam density, and where to buy.

Any advice/recomendations gratefully received.

We bought 50mm foam from Raskelf. These were the presized units sold IIRC as a motor caravan topper. We use them on top of the existing rather thin berth cushions. In my opinion (55 yrs old , a bit stiff but no particular problems but want a decent nights sleep 50mm does it for us , 25mm is too thin) We bought 2 standard units , they are not cheap at Raskelf. We offset them cos of the funny shape of our rear double berth. Watch out if your berth is low , I only just have enough shoulder room if I lie on my side under the cockpit.

We have a 3" topper, professionally added to the normal foam matress and the Froli spring system under the matress on Pincoya. It is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on and we will be replicating this system on our new boat.

we have 2" memory foam topper last season on the boat and it is absolutely brilliant, one of the best purchases I have ever made. Apart from the comfort an added benefit is that they are very warm underneith. The one we have at home is showing no sign of compressing/losing its memory feature after 2.5 years.
Get one with a detachable/washable liner if possible, to keep the mattress itself totally clean.
Many double toppers on e bay shops at a good price - we have one cheap e bay purchase and one double the price and we see no difference in performance.

We went for a 75mm topper from these people for the boat, very reasonably priced (no connection, only satisfied customer).

They are great, ended up buying another for home as well. It takes a few nights to get used to the extra warmth that they generate but we struggle to sleep anywhere without one now. It has solved SWMBO's long standing shoulder ache and my back is much improved because of it.

Also, it seems to have removed the issue of condensation forming under the mattress, presumably this is because they do not breathe like normal foam?

Memory foam is produced in varying density

[/ QUOTE ] The websites already mentioned give guides as to the most suitable grade of foam and also advice on thickness. One relates it to body mass index but basically the heavier you are the firmer and thicker you need it. Logical I suppose.

Beware of many mail order ads etc. If they don't specify a thickness it is probably only 1" and the firmness is anybody's guess.

Also, the denser the foam the firmer the ride..
I've gone for a low density for a softer feel, also, more air in the foam so keeps cooler.
