A friend of mine (with no internet access!) is interested in purchasing a Memory 19 gaff-rigged sloop designed by Tony Robinson some 20 years ago.

He is looking to sail it on the Broads/estuaries.

If anyone has any experience of this boat, be it good, bad or indifferent, I would appreciate a comment.

Thanks in anticipation

Robert

Sorry, no direct experience, just a few comments. From memory they are a centreboarder after the style of the shrimper, but heavier. I once knew a carpenter who worked on these. I would expect the build quality and joinery to be excellent. I believe they went out of business, basically, because they were not built down to the price that they were sold at.

There was an article in Sailing Today (Circa Sept 2003) on a Memory 19, bought and sailed back from the IOM and now kept in the Yealm (I saw it this summer).

These are great boats if you like a proper gaffer. The mould was made from an original gaff cutter, one of a number used to police the oyster beds in the Colne, (Essex). Consequently they are quite heavy powerful boats with a good spread of sail, not to be confused with modern mini gaffers.

And as far as I know they are still being built by a yard on the Hamble (Salterns? Not sure). Certainly sail well - they usually are at or near the top of their class in the Solent Old Gaffers races.

Very nice boats, as a previous poster has said, still being made by Greg Dalrymple at Salterns. They are great to sail and very fast. A friend of mine has one he is considering selling, if you PM me I could put you in touch.
Cheers

i have a Memeory 19 that is nearing a comprehensive rebuild after being lain dormant on its trailer for many years .
It has a set of brand new sails still wrapped in original sail bags.
The mast has been converted to Tabernackle so it's quick to erect .
It still has the original two berth cabin with large open cockpit with two bench seats running down each side. New washboards ,new locker lids.
All timber is mostly mahogany with teak rubbing strakes.
It is on a poggy back yard trailer. The road trailer needs some work but is still road worthy.
I have fitted a new bow sprit and it just needs the base painting.
New winch fitted to heavy metal centre plate.
Original lead ingots for ballast under floorboards.
It has a washbasin and a hand push water tap just need a water container plumbing in.
There is a two ring gas burner cooker with grill, again just needs plumbing in with the supplied copper pipe.
Make a very good weekender and they are very fast if you want to sail like that. The boom extends out over the transom and is 15 1/2' long.
All spars are spruce with little or no knots.
It's at Sleaford Lincs 07788441244

Just for the record the mould wasn't made from an 'original gaff cutter', a new wooden plug was built and the mould taken from that in the conventional way. A second stronger mould was made in 1976 using a hull out of the original mould. That hull is my boat, Elwing, see Memory 19 on facebook.
