Went into the Butley River this afternoon. Just inside the entrance is what looks like a shrine to someone who died there, rather like the ones all over our part of London to commemorate victims of traffic accidents or stabbings. I find them a bit sentimental and mawkish and prefer the stoic reserve in such matters as my parents generation displayed. Anyway, I guess it's a reminder of some personal tragedy and for the people involved it's truly horrible, but what is the point of these shrines? Eventually they become neglected and look horrible, and the one in the Butley gave me the creeps.

There are lots of benches in Old Leigh overlooking the river. Many have plaques "in memory of Roy who loved this view" kind of thing. One always has several bunches of flowers tied to it and so nobody uses it. If people want a permanent shrine then have a burial of loved ones and visit a grave.
