I used Meguiars exclusively every 2 years on my old Hallberg-Rassy, for the last 12 years or so. Excellent products - very easy to apply by hand and polish off by hand. I used to apply 2 treatments of #45 polish, followed by 2 applications of #56 pure wax. The boat then went back into the water for another 2 years, and kept looking good.

I have been doing the same to my Fulmar. Read this article:
http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/Gelcoat_Polishing.html
I found it very useful and I followed their recommendations and the results were very good. Lots of days of hard work with a polishing machine. I went slightly further and removed 5 different colours of red paint from the transom and then polished the gel coat. Everyone said I was nuts doing that, but had so many compliments when I finished. Also encouraged some other owners to think they really should do the same.

Plenty of photos of what I have done at http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/ConcertoFulmar32/library/?sort=3&page=3t http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/C...StarboardBow_zpsaffb755c.jpg.html?sort=3&o=64. Then click on page 2 and finally page 1 to see how she looks now.

Pleased you are going to do the job properly. Too many old boats are painted rather than compounded and polished. Do post some photos of the before and after results as encouragement for other owners in a similar position.

You'll find you'll get a much better result if you use #45 Polish after the compounding and before the Pure Wax.

Here's what my 24-year-old hull looked like just before I sold her.
