Paul Allen's boat was in Durban a few weeks ago. This week, another mega yacht was moored up in the same place Allen's boat was docked. Shame they were in the worst part of town and probably chose to fly off in their helicopters rather than face the neighbourhood.

I wonder if the super rich face similar docking nightmares the world over?

Probably - if only because there are so few "nice" berths available for the really Mega yachts. They either have to anchor off of go to the commercial port.

Stll. at 7 metres, not really a problem for me!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I suspect that some of their tenders struggle to get into many marinas.

Bit of a bummer having to stay on the yacht swinging on an anchor bouncing about when we are nice and comfortable in a marina berth.

I'am outraged that this minority group of decent people are treated like this with nowhere to go.

Yeah, bummer. I mean, can you imaging having to go boating on one of those things? Paul Allen has it pretty rough, we should feel for him. NOT.

Worst of it is, you are paying someone else to do the interesting stuff ...
... and as for getting it into a really pretty anchorage (my favourite being Blood Alley Lake, Poole Harbour - not as dire as the name sounds!) - well, not much chance there ...
Poor sods. What a life, eh?

[/ QUOTE ]Some of them are rich enough to have a marina built for them each place they go.

Who is paul Allen, and what's his yacht called?

Saw Rising Sun in Cartagena in June. It had a hatch on the side for a tender which is as big as Rogue...... funny looking boat though!

How big is Mega? >100ft, 200ft, 300ft ???

Paul Allen is the co founder of Microsoft. One of wealthiest people in the world. He doesn't have the profile of Bill Gates, but same sort of wealth. He also likes big boats, and has commissioned many of the biggest privately owwned.

Here are some details of one of Paul Allen's boats (ooops, ships) at http://www.powerandmotoryacht.com/megayachts/1103top100/index1.aspx
She visited Barbados a few times last winter - I think that when you are in this league it all comes down to 'who has the most toys' - Octopus has a dry dock at the back for some of the toys (I think they even include a submarine, as well as the boring stuff like helicopters and such).
