Hi all I am inerested in a product I saw in a back issue of MBY. (MBY did say they were gonna test it but I havent yet seen such a test) Its called Megapulse, and it reduces build up of sulphate on battery plates. The sulphate reduces the batteries efficiency apparantly plus can lead to shorting if it gets bad, so it is claimed.

I put the following problem to the manufacturers.
It has become very apparant in our Marina as many clients go away for months at a time and leave their chargers on. What we are finding is that this results in the electrolite being used up and batteries becoming dry.

The manufacturers claim that this is because of the sulphate build up on the plates, which resists charge, so if say you have one or two batteries in a bank of four which have this problem the charger cannot sense the correct charge state and tends to remain on boost , not go to trickle charge, thus this boils the electrolite away.

This is what appears to be happening. One client recently had left it so long his bank of eight batteries took 67litres of water to fill, and four of em were shot.

Anyone had experience of this product? Anything which helps cure this problem woudl be welcomed.

Hi, You will find that most of the better specification battery chargers have this facility, we have a Sterling Power digital charger and this does. On start up it uses a pulse wave, that in theory, dislodges any sulphates that have built up on the plates.
Sterling also produce a unit specifically to do this Sterling Power

I dont know the product but the name "pulse2 suggests it uses the pulse method as mentioned by passitivelypossessed

I always leave my charger on and I've had this problem over the years many times. Simplest cure imho is just to buy sealed batteries the next time. Builders often fit the ones with little fill-up lids, cos they're cheaper, but at the first battery change get sealed batteries and the problem goes away

I think the sulphate build up starts once the acid is there, sealed or not sealed, I'll check.

I know Merc are fitting these to all their new Vito vans.

I have one, which seems to have rejuvenated my car battery - can't say for sure how old the battery is, but it was on the car when I bought it 4 years ago.

I have it on the starter battery of the boat at the moment - that battery looked in need of replacement in 2001 when I bought the boat. During the last 7-8 years it started to discharge faster during start-ups (sometimes struggling to run up the second of the 2 engines). My hope is that it will rejuvenate this also - keeping my fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi,

Which charger do you have and are you happy with it? I'm in the market for a new one after mine went bang today and the Sterling seems like the likely replacement.

Cheers

[/ QUOTE ] Interesting. I guess they are probably EDTA. See also THIS WEBSITE There is also some info on there about sulphation and pulsers.
