Which is all very nice, thank you, but of course they do this sort of thing for the benefit of their commercial customers not yotties who are lost. So, what do they do for us? Genuine question.

Genuine Answer.
Assume by "US" means the sailing community, which some might dare to suggest are only one part of a much larger group of folks who enjoy the privilege of having an amazing river on our doorstep.
The Medway does not just consist of the short Reach immediately outside of MYC but extends from Allington to Sheerness, Peel Ports wether we like it or not are responsible for all of it.
The river does suprisingly actually start from some mysterious source up beyond Rochester Bridge and the the river frequently has to be cleared of debris up there , appreciate this is of little concern for those racing round the cans Mid August but the skippers and craft who moor and use this section of the river are pleased to see Peel Ports attempting to clear some of the larger lumps.
They are also responsible for removing any fallen trees preventing navigation on the narrow section below the lock, they frequently have to engage the EA (and pay) to get this job done due to their craft not being able to get under the bridge at Aylesford.
Another little problem is the habit of local boatyards of towing out non payers and wrecks at dead of night and abandoning on any handy buoy or foreshore, somebody has to pay for recovery and disposal.
Two new abandoned boats ? on buoys spotted at Gillingham last week.
Peel Ports also hire a local company in an attempt to waylay PWC and other miscreants speeding on the river especially around Queenborough on busy weekends .
The funds raised from the registration fees do not go anywhere covering the above.

As somebody who has been boating on the river since the late 1950s, some of us still use those commercial buoys, the first sight of No1 on the horizon or the reassuring flash of No32 when passing at 02.00 in the pitch black is dead handy. :)
