This is not about the type of anchor. Its about how much rope and chain to carry.
The boat is a steel barge and 18m long, I have a 30kg danforth copy with 25m of 10mm chain. I know that I will need to add some rope but what length? I recon that 50m of 16mm nylon should see me OK.
Just to add to details I will not be out iif the forecast is anything above a force 3-4 and only intend to anchor in places like Stangate creek but possibly overnight.

A Steel barge 98ft long? what you have should barely be regarded as a kedge anchor with 10mm chain, look at what the Thames barges carry probably a 4cwt anchor and 3/4 chain minimum. Remember the tide runs hard in Stangate and the wind might get up! by the way il be anchored in Sharfleet!

Where does 98ft come from? I wish it was
60 ft at best...................
I agree about the anchor and chain for a thames barge.
30kg is light by about 10kg if I was anchoring in all conditions.
However I will be very circumspect about leaving london if there is any chance of anything above force 3 in the forecast.
Is Sharfleet a better bet for anchoring?
and is the concrete barge still at Queenborough?

Woops pressed wrong button on calculator, actually59! same advice about the chain and anchor though, Sharfleet is also a good anchorage but there are some very deep holes and big high mudbanks which you would not want to get stuck on.
The concrete barge is still at Queenbro and has been done up.

I would agree with the thoughts expressed; I would take a bigger anchor (and a CQR not Danforth), and bigger and heavier chain, but I'm sure you'll be careful! You will find it more difficult to get marina moorings/picking up buoys etc simply because of your size, so will have to anchor more than smaller boats would.

Having "done" the Medway a couple of times, it's not the prettiest of rivers, in fact downright grotty between Rochester and Allington. Why not anchor in the East Swale, and come up to the Blackwater/Colne/Backwaters? Loads of places to anchor in pretty surroundings. Brightlingsea has it's music and beer festivals soon, and the Pyefleet would be ideal for Perglena.

Yep your planned 50m will be fine.

Like some others, your anchor is minimal. It'd be okay for short term casual anchoring, but not overnight - get a general purpose type, not a Danforth, and something a little bigger.
