I am considering spending a year or so cruising the Mediterranean but have little local knowledge. Of course, this region is very well served by many diverse publications and there are very useful Pilots commonly available. I have alse enjoyed such reading as the Alard Coles guide which has many useful tips.

So I am hoping that forumites might be able to share known links to online Mediterranean cruising blogs or suchlike that will aid preparation and add to interest and insight.

Please therefore reply with any links you feel would be of either navigational, technical or general interest. My area of particular interest is the Med' west of Turkey. Thank you

Let me declare an interest. I'm a Cruising Association member. The CA has a very strong Mediterranean special interest section, and a fantastic online community called MedNet.

This question, asked by a CA member of that community, would provide tons of info. You'd also be able to attend the all-day Med cruising seminar to be held in London in March.

If you're serious about Med Cruising, join the CA. Discounts on Med marinas might even recoup (and more) your membership fee.

The seminar is open to non-members:

Good strategy from the CA if they are serious about attracting new members.

I'm thinking about rejoining and asked at the Boat Show if I could see a set of their accounts only to be told that they are kept in the members' only section of the website! Eventually a set was produced later in the day, and the finances do seem to be in a better state than they were a couple of years ago.

Let me declare total disinterest! If, like me ,you are not a "joiner", just spend some time browsing the liveaboard site. Buy Rod Heikell guides for the areas that particularly interest you.Get afew charts to get the "feel" of it.

I don't think you'll get a lot of info on the Med EAST of Turkey!

Thanks all for taking a moment to consider this. I am not much of a "joiner" to quote Judd, but it would appear as if the CA may be a very useful source of information. Thanks for the suggestion.

Aye, Judd you're right; probably not "..a lot of info on the Med EAST of Turkey!". Probably not a lot north of Turkey either, but there may have been a load of wasted effort South of Turkey - right?

Cheers all.

One other good thing about the A is its library which not only seems to have every chart of the world, but ever pilot book and lots of reports from members about everything from customs formalities to harbours and anchorages. Membership is worth it just for that cruise planning facility.

And unless you are London based, it cant really be used as a club so no worry if you arent a joiner. Regard it as a library instead.

I was a member for several years before getting involved in any way. Worth it for downloading pilot corrections and updates, plus much other cruising information. Now back in UK I am more involved and will be at the Med forum in March.

I got a lot of info from blogs of people who had gone before:

http://www.zialater.com/abouttheboat.htm

http://yachtvigdis.wordpress.com/

http://www.morganscloud.com/

http://www.hitrapia.co.uk/intro.htm

Morgans Cloud isnt Med cruising, but good for equipment, particularly new generation anchors!!

Didnt find the Cruising Association much use or interest at all - very dissappointed!!

Cheers

Richard

Many thanks for taking the trouble to contribute so usefully. I look froward to exploring your links.
I have spent quite a bit of time looking at the CA website this evening. I must be careful not to make a rash judgement based upon this representation of their offerings alone but I am rather uninspired. Were I London based (I'm in the Highlands), I might moderate my initial impressions but let us say that the jury is still out as to whether I wish to join their number! Thanks again.

Any other blogs/essays that folk might add would be appreciated.

Cheers
