Mediterranean Boating - Sorry....couldn\'t resist it!!!! (Pic Heavy)

Sorry.... for those who have already come ashore for the winter.....this is for you!!

Nick_Pam went out to Empuriabrava for a birthday celebration at the beginning of the month and we just wanted to share with you a truly great weekend and winter Mediterranean boating at its very best.......

It was eerily quiet as we motored down the canal from our berth weith the thermometer settled on 20 degrees

And just as quiet as we set off towards L'Estartit for my birthday "bash" - looking North towards Rosas in the background....

Flat calm in the bay....and it was warm enough for shorts too, even with a 28kt breeze!!!

For once it wasn't bouncy as we approached Islas Medas...just look at that 'big' sky!!!

And even more calm as we passed through the inshore passage towards the entrance to L'Estartit marina - there were still plenty of dive boats ferrying the web-footers out to Islas Medas, and a few line fisherman taking advantage of the conditions and the peace & quiet

"Freya" berthed in the winter sunshine on L'Estartit outer mole.....(BTW July price €58/night; September price €32/night; November price €18.29/night.....and it was empty!!!)

Nick_Pam enjoying a quiet dinner for two...The Catalan don't eat until midnight and we were starving by 7pm!!!

The following day it was a fabulous run across the mouth of the Bay of Roses to Cadaques...

and Pam took the obligatory wake shot as we passed Cap Norfeu

before we headed back towards Empuriabrava and noticed for the first time that we were in T-shirts and there was snow on the Pyrenees!!!!!!!!!!!

We probably won't get much more time to do this before the New Year now, but with memories (and a whole load more photographs) like this who cares???????

DavidJ and Jan were out playing too....just about the only boats to leave Empuriabrava all weekend, and both of them British flagged.....

Bring on the mad dogs............ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great Post,

A lot of people talk about having a boat in the med for year round cruising....but they do not do it. Great to see you having fun in the sun!

Cheers

problem with being ashore is
1. other people are still having fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
2. all the bills start..

Lovely when you have the sea to yourself.

Great post, Nick_Pam. Brought back memories of our Costa Brava cruise this year although the seas were generally more boisterous for us than you describe. We found some fabulous anchorages north of Roses but we regretted that we didn't have time to spend a day in Cadaques. We paid about €80 per night in L'Estartit in August so I'm pleased to see that prices come down in winter!

Great post and even better pics!! Let's have some more like this to remind us what boating's all about whilst we mope around in damp old blighty!
The pictures brought back memories of our summer at Rosas, we used to go to all the same places so was nice to see them again.

Good to see Cadaques without too many moored boats.

That's how it used to look in the early 70s when we anchored there many times. We used to eat in Casa Anitas around one big table with the hippy community, when it was a great and cheap place to eat. Unfortunately it has now become an expensive up market restaurant.

If the wind was the wrong way for the bay, we could go round the corner to anchor off Dali's house in Port Ligat, where he would let us take water from his tap.

Brings it all back to me> had a fab two years in Catalunya, boated, skiid, did go-kart racing, lovely area, friendly people, occasionally caught out by the Tramontona wind, particularly one nasty night in Selva. But we forget the bad bits, and bring home lovely photos, well done Nick and Pam! Amazing how beautiful the centres of the older resorts are in the quiet of winter!Empuriabrava is still such an amazing place to moor up especially with a mobo, as you can get away from the bouncy bits around the Capitania/Marina Office, to quieter water.(low bridges limit yachts)Proper order some might be tempted to say! Good boating to all!
