Does anyone have any suggestions apart from GH insurance and their Yaschtsmans gold policy, on where to get insurance to cover for any medical eventuality when doing an Atlantic circuit, will any other companies consider covering yachtsmen on their travels.

And just to satisfy SWMBO what are medical facilities like in the Caribbean in the highly unlikely event that they may be needed.

On a semi-related topic, in the unlikely event of releasing an EPIRB and being rescued by dedicated rescue services (as opposed to a passing ship) - Is the cost covered by the country of pickup, or by the stranded yachtsmans insurance? (Or lack therof)?

We stayed with our PPP policy. Don't know about the other islands but Trinidad is good, Venezuela is excellent (better than the top private hospitals in the UK and level with the top USA teaching hospitals).

Just thinking a bit more about it Guadeloupe and Martinique should be up to French standards - they are full Departments (like UK counties) of France. Wouldn't want to try Dominica or some of the other small islands.

Grenada has a big US teaching hospital right on the beach, Grande anse I think it's called.

The hospital refectory is also right on the beach and offers very good cheap local food, if you don't mind sitting with a bunch of med students.

When I was in Trinidad (on "Moonriver") the Trinidadians I made friends with all flew to Venezuela for their medical care, as did a lot of Americans. Flew down from Miami and thereabouts. And on a totally different note (pun!), watching a prom concert recently, I learned that there are over 300 youth orchestras in Venezuela. So, what do they have that we don't? I know ----- it's called sunshine.

When we fell off a very big wave my crew fell across the cabin and received severe head injuries from her nose to the top of her head.. big flapping bits of skin.

A US coastguard big frigate size patrol boat picked her up and took her to Columbia where she received first class cosmetic surgery as well as other treatment.. The cosmetic surgeon did a perfect job - probably better than anything available in the UK... Very modest charge as well... Like Venezuela, Columbia has a superb medical system provided you have a little money......
