Medical insurance for a year on a boat

We're having trouble finding someone to insure us! We're going away round the Med for a year, we have both recently completed our ICC and VHF course, have only that experience of cruising, hope to buy a Broom 12m - we just need medical insurance for 365 days continuous round Europe - but my broker can't find anything cos (a) we have little experience and (b) most say a maximum of 90 days out of country. Can anyone recommend anyone? Much appreciated.
 
In Cost Conscious Cruiser, published 1999, Lin & Larry Pardey list a Danish and a UK insurer as possibliities:

We haven't tried them yet, but may need to do so this year. Has anyone had experience with either of these?

You should be able to buy an International Policy from one of the following; PPP, BUPA, Norwich Union, Royal Sun Alliance. It will most likely exclude pre-existing conditions but should give good cover up to a specified limit, depending upon how much you pay.

Assuming yours isn't, have you tried a specialist medical insurance broker?
 
IHI Denmark, $3400 for a year, full health cover up to $1.5 million anywhere, posibly cheaper if you take out USA.
 
For professional reasons, I have my own private insurance at IHI (http://www.ihi.dk/ihiwww.nsf/all/frontpage).

They offer many possibilities, among which complements to NHS, etc.
Have a look at their site.
I had very good experiences with them, at an affordable price, given my rather special status.
The price I pay is for worldwide coverage, health and accident.
No surprise supplement for ... say USA, or "dangerous" activities, sports, etc.
Whatever happens, if I end up at an Hospital, they will pay .... their contractual part, which you can adapt to your needs.

Of course, the price will vary according to the existing conditions (your age, antecedants, etc.) ... as usual.

Anyway, the best is to stay healthy!
... Even if you paid the insurance.

My costing was for treatment ouside the UK, but I'm sure you could get a much cheaper policy that would allow, the stabilise and transport home scenario, thats not what I would want, to arrive home and join the NHS waiting list! So I have full private medical care, in whatever country I'm in, unless of course I WANT to go to UK, then I'm a private patient there aswell.
 
and of course if you are staying in eu you are entitled to same health care as
everyonre else ,so you are actually only paying for the BUPA style upgrade.
one should get the correct form from UK for eu healthcare agreement but in fact
it doesnt make any difference.
no where that I have been in Europe has questioned giving me health care ,yes I have
used it.
 
Pantaenius do a travel insurance for 12 months. they quoted me £525 for two of us with cover of up to 5 million and that included USA, but it is not full health insurance, it is emergency and repatriation.
 
Club Direct

I use Club Direct (http://www.clubdirect.com/) who provide worldwide health care cover, for cruising periods of up to a year. (Emergency/repatriation basis). Experience not an issue. It cost my partner and I together about £800 per year last time we took it out, a couple of years back. Not had to claim, so can't comment on this.

In the more civilized European countries you might risk no insurance and rely on the E111. We've had emergency health care in France on that basis. Fine, just the same as NHS, no cash needed up front, but we were eventually charged 10% of the total bill.

Just rung Club Direct - they said that I'm too much of a risk!?!? I told them there was more risk crossing Kilburn High Road than living on board a motor boat for a year - but they wouldn't budge. They recommended I contact the Association of British Insurers - I'll let you all know what they say. Thanks all for the information so far - we'll find something!!

Just got a quote over the phone from my local financial shop.
75 quid for everything me and wife, Plane/ boat. As long as I stay in Europe and go sort of round the edges and not cross any oceans. Potter down and around med Ok. Must read small print though to see just what it covers.
