Weather looking spot on for Saturday departure, and advice is to get medical insurance for a CI trip.

My bank account throws in free travel insurance for family including "children" up to 23 years of age provided they are in full time education so 21 year old is pleased he is still a child!

Couple of months ago I phoned up bewildered of Barclays on a Sunday afternoon whose concern was that if we sunk we werent insured and he wasnt sure if we would be covered for anything else as we were travelling under our own steam... so I terminated that conversation.

Phoned efficient of Barclays just now and she said we ARE covered for medical emergencies once we got there but not en route which is understandable.

I wouldnt like to ask if anyone has experience for obvious reasons, but other than ploughing through the small print - which I will do when I get the time - what do those of you who do travel to the CIs do, or do you rely on a similar policy to mine ?

At one time I thought travel insurance provided cover while travelling. I thought perhaps it might cover me if travelling for work.
It seems not.
To be covered you may well have to be on some sort of holiday that you have paid for , including paid accommodation and there may be a minimum period of the holiday , something like a couple of overnight says . I found our insurance , included with a current account with Nat West , did not cover us while we are on holiday on our own boat as we were not paying for accommodation.
But it did cover us for a holiday abroad staying in a hotel or a villa. It might even have covered us if we were staying on a hire boat.

It seems you realise you should obtain and read the terms and conditions for your banks policy rather than rely on a phone conversation, of which there will be no trace .
Or obtain specific medical insurance if you feel you require it.

Most travel policies do not cover you for anything if you are not travelling by a public carrier ( ie airline or ferry co) and do not stay in public accommodation ie hotel or guest house or I assume ? holiday let .

This means they are useless for travelling on your own boat.

I have the opposite problem to you ie if I have an accident or fall ill north of the channel, Wife and I have a Bishop Skinner policy for yachtsmen ( includes MOBO's) which also covers me worldwide, business and pleasure and skiing, it is a year round policy, I recommend it. http://www.bishopskinner.com/travel-insurance/#.U9CQ6k10zVg

You can also get a policy for short stays of travel from the Post Office in the UK.

I didn't bother at all...but then noticed we are covered by a policy similar to yours anyway. It was after someone on here had a £2k bill in Guernsey. I thought Jersey did have some tie with Uk for medical?
Re underway.. well, it is only a few hours. Ok, accidents do happen, but I would have thought there are 364 other days of the year with higher risks?

Our RBS credit card insurance used to cover us within territorial limits & living on the boat.

Last year they "enhanced it" adding cover outside territorial limits. Unfortunately they also added a clause that said if the main purpose of your holiday was one of the sports such as boating then cover was only provided "as long as that was not the main purpose of the holliday". This effectively rules us out as we stay on the boat.

It would also appear to rule out chartering as well.

Of course if it a ski or golf holiday there is full cover. Obviously the managers don't go boating.

I challenged them on all of this going through the complaints procedure but they would not budge.

I suspect many people rely on their packaged insurance but could find in reality they have no cover if they are living on the boat during their holiday.

Like others I bought a policy with Bishop Skinner, very straightforward folks to talk to & also deal with previous conditions fairly in my view.
