Went to RYA today as I was advised that in order to get commercial endorsement one has to go to Sea Survival course - present oneself and 'tis done. Not so I found. In fact, you have to have a medical as well and the Doc fills in a form and signs it.

Took form to Docs and was told

1. Can't get appointment before 10th March (Hmmmm another post I think)
2. It will cost me £108 - sit down quickly before you pass out.

Has anyone undergone this medical themselves and has anyone any idea where I might get the medical cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to shop around. I didn't bother with my local GP because of the waiting list so I went to a Doc opposite Ocean Village and it cost me £60 and a two day wait. If it's of any help Southampton Water Activities Centre recommended the Doc and will have his details.

There has been a sign in our local medical centre for at least three years now saying that there is a minimum charge of £110 + VAT for private medical examinations. I think you should check with whichever Doc you decide upon that he/she is on the list of approved medics for this medical, too. The list used to be Appendix 2 to the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Regulations (M Notice M.1500) Good Luck.

The form does not mention a list. It says "a GP that may be your own GP" and the people at the RYA didn't mention a specific GP.

Thanks

My Doc has charged me various prices for the medical. Between £22 & £33 depending on how convincing the sob story I told at each examination was.

I am told that the questions on the form are very similar to those on the HGV Lorry Drivers Cert. so the price should be similar to this.

My advice would be to shop around as £108 does seem a bit steep.

My last one was 2 years ago, with my own GP, at seventy pounds inc VAT. Think I'll shop around too next time.

I thought I got stiched up.

At £75. As an examination it was a bit of a piss take. The only measured test was can you read 6 @ 6 which is the sixth line down the eye chart at 6ft. The rest was a bit like "How are you?". Though if you use your own GP he knows if your in good enough condition I suppose.

My HGV med test had me measured and weighed, blood pressure taken and eye's tested all for £47.

I have to get 2 medicals done 1 for YM (com) and 1 for boatmans Lic the last time I went to my own GP it cost 70 quid each so I "lined up" my test so that I only have 1 test for both now, but reading the lists here I think I might shop around a bit<s>

Re: I thought I got stiched up.

Wow I'm staggered that my GP should know the state of my health - I only pop in to see him every 4 or 5 years or so, or if a new life policy requires a medical.

And finally...

Thanks to AOD's excellent advice I have found a slightly more cost effective method.

They are:

Ocean Medical Centre, Southampton.
Tel: 02380 223546
Price: £60

Thanks again AOD.

Re: And finally...

Delighted that I could help.

That Doc does loads of these and I think I am right in saying that he's a yotty so although it's a comprehensive medical it's a realistic one.

Good luck

Re: yottie doc

not sure that being a yottie doctor means a more realistic medical, does it?
Surely a yottie doc would assume anything that he can't see is possibly a bit dodgy. Or he'll think that loudly creaking legs if you lean to one side is fine? If you have a few blisters on your feet he might recommend massive surgery.

If I was a yottie doctor, I would recommend that Mrs Magic chop him in for a bigger, more solidly built and possibily swedish model. With two masts...
