I am seriously considering moving the boat to Spain (I know, I know). I have the opportunity of moorings in Mahon (at the top by the power station) or at Bonaire in the Bay of Pollenca.

Our favoured place is Menorca but:-
a) Cheap Flights for short breaks are almost non existant
b) The location offered (by the power station is not the best)

Bonaire on the other hand looks like a nice marina but is some distance from the airport meaning expensive cab or more likely car hire.

Both are annual rentals but I have been made aware by a distiguished member of this forum (thanks TCM) that the contracts allow for you to be kicked off at a months notice - Does thios happen often?

Has anybody any advice or suggestions. Should I focus on the mainland?

Thanks for any suggestions

Say b*******x to the business - let me have your job and I'll run it for you then you can spend all your time in the med - forget the flights - you wont need to come back - and the compnay will be in safe hands.

I'll post you a cheque every week !!

We found the availability of Friday night out + Sunday night back again flights to be the deciding factor in choosing which area to base our boat (Nice). I dont think even Palma,Majorca has convenient flights during the winter
Have you considering a marina near Alicante? A friend of mine has just got a berth at Denia without any problem and he says both scheduled and charter flights are plentiful

Yes the Alicante area is our next option. You are right about the flights. I understand that Denia has been recently expanded. The nice thing is that from here the Balearics (Ibiza) is well within the safe cruising range of my boat.
I think I will check out Denia.

Thanks

Hi There,

Although now stuck on Windermere I have spent the last two summers in Menorca. I can't praise it highly enough. In Mahon the service is excellent from most of the dealers and the prices are competitive. I Used to use Mahon Harbour in the Early 90s and It was great. The only Issue is the long queues for fuel and the time to get in and out of the Harbour. For the last two years used Cal'n'bosch Marina. It is Cheaper, you can always get fuel and is on the nicest side of the Island. On the downside it is a bit like Blackpool! Overall I rate Menorca excellent. The only problem is the Flight prices! You can however fly Easy Jet to Barcelona and take the ferry over. It is a lot cheaper!

I however have decided on Alicante (as just got an Apartment there) Flights are cheap, Marinas look good and on the whole most living costs are cheaper. At the end of the day it is personal preference. Wherever I end up there won't be a speed limit and that is what counts!

Cheers

N.

Hi Paul

We know Menorca well as we have holidayed there every year since the kids were young, and it would be our preferred destination, the downside as you quite rightly say is flights but your idea is worth exploring. What are the mooring rates like in Cala'n Bosch (like the Tapas Bar there) and security seems non-existent. Did you have any problems.? Is there a shower block / laundry?

I have been offered a berth in Menorca about the same price as WMV but it is at the top end of the harbour facing the power station and the Freight port, not the most scenic part. On the other hand Bonaire looks very pretty.

Just looked at your bio and realised that we are on the same jetty in WMV! My boat is "My Girls". Wouldn't mind picking your brains about Menorca over a nice beer.

What are your plans when the speed limit is introduced? There are a lot of people muttering about going to the med. What made you come back to Windermere?

"over a nice beer"

You've obviously moved on from Foster's then Martyn!

(Don't forget to include me on the invites list - so long as there's TT on tap)

We are in our second year at Denia. Great flight options to either Alicante or Valencia. If you want any info let me know.
