Hi my first real post... having decided on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39Ds/42Ds I am just trying to understand the step increase in costs between the two boats.

The 39 is under 12 meters and the 42 is of course over 12 meters.

Looking around some marinas are now charging by area mts sq. and some price breaks are 12 mtrs and other 13mtrs.

Obviously there are other cost increases for maintenance, insurance etc

Has anyone any data or idea what the step cost increase is for the 40 foot length break?

Is it 10% 20% 30% ?

I have no real idea so all infomation gratefully received.

And if anyone knows of either of these boats for sale (post 2007) in the med would be a winner

Thanks

David

There is really no generalisation except that there are bands and 12m is a common point at which berthing costs per m tend to jump. As you have already found out some marinas charge by area and others by berth length. 12m+ berths are in shorter supply as average boat lengths have increased, hence the ability to charge a premium. It really only becomes an issue if you are taking an annual or other long term contract where the berth cost is a big chunk of your annual budget, or if you intend when cruising to make use of expensive marinas in the season. Even then it is only one of your running costs and the further you move east the less important berthing costs become.

Expect other running costs will be little different between the two boats and suggest other factors might have higher priority when making you choice of boat. If it is the "big" purchase and the 42 offers more, that is the boat to buy. If you can live with a 39 and the price/condition blend is right, then buy that. www.yachtworld.com will give you a big proportion of the boats for sale in the main Med markets.

Senisble stuff from Tranona, as ever.
Also worth noting that plenty of Med marinas use charge bands changing on the half metre, eg. 11.5m to 12.5m, 12.5m to 13.5m. Not sure of the precise lengths of the OP's two options, but perhaps worth comparing their fit with such a system.

Equally, and I may as well mention it before someone else does, SSR applications are less than rigorous in their checking of actual length ;)

Whilst I appreciate that you want to minimise your costs, if you're buying a boat to live on in the Med you should buy the boat that best suits your needs. You'll not be a happy bunny if you buy the 39 based on cost expectations and then find you'd have been better off on the 42.
