I've heard of the Atlantic Circuit, is there a Med Circuit that takes one year? I have a year off work from May and will travel through the canals on my 24ft steel yacht. Which way to go once in the Med, any ideas would be appreciated, or any good books on the subject you can recommend.

Don't know of any formal "Med Circuit" rally or similar since most just coast or island hop to their own schedule. Rod Heikel is the most prolific author on the Med and a comprehensive selection of his pilot books is essential IMHO. Charts are of variable reliability and particularly in the eastern med are based on quite old hydrography. Imray's being more comprehensive in that area. Incidentally the Imray "Mediterranean Pilot 2001-02" is also well worth the money and it has tide tables - yes there ARE tides in the Med but mostly confined to the upper Adriatic. Marina charges are high on the south coast of France and don't get much cheaper until you get about half way down Italy.
Our boat is in Athens and we are flying out tomorrow (Friday). Generally speaking in the eastern med you should try to go north in the winter/spring and south for the rest of the year to take advantage of prevailing winds. Heikel gives full details of these and the surface currents.

Steve - we have been thinking about the great move to the med, and had thought about Athens as a suitable area - given that there are some good flights there.
Again costs to us poor yachtmen is important - what are the costs of an anual mooring and any suggestions as to which marina?

Two halves
I've heard it said that the med deserves at least two years, one for east of Italy, one for west. West will be much more expensive.

Kalamaki where we are is a raving, bustling place with thousands of boats, discos (not the Land Rover variety!) going all night and someone is likely to jump your berth as soon as you leave but it is very convenient - was even more so when the airport was next door but now, to accomodate the Olympics, it's 16 miles NE of the city.(40mins taxi). Mooring costs are about £2100 for a 14.5metre boat inc VAT, Electricity & water for a year. Glyfadda & Zea are a bit more expensive but quieter.

It describes all lighthouses from Gibraltar (even Trafalgar) to Tunisia (included) through Spain, France, Italy, as well as the islands (Balearics, Corsica, Sardinia, etc).
Most harbours and marinas are described as well, including a plan, tel. nos., prices, names and adresses of the clubs, etc.
As it is edited each and every year, the informations are well up to date.
In my eyes, it's well worth the FFR150.- (€ 23.-), and replaces any out of date charts and books of lights.
It's even legal in France to have this book rather than books of lights.

Dont forget Preveza .In the season ( may to october)! charter flights are plentiful and cheap.Flying time is one hour less.and with the new airport in Athens being much further out than the old.its more of a pain.Mooring costs in the ionian are cheaper than Athens area.The new marina at levkas is 75% complete wich means that people are changing their schedules. before it was dry sailing .but now its possible to launch at Easter and haul in October.Reckon on about £1200 +vat for a 10m. I m mid way at patras . About £600 per year for a 9.5m, not a very salubrious marina but right in the town. about 3 hours from Athens airport and the same to Preveza.

My prices also apply to Gouvia Marina on Corfu
But out of season flights are limited to Athens although an island hopper is about £30 ew.
