What would all you old hands say is the better engine a MERCRUSIER 3.6L DIESEL WITH BRAVO 2 OUTDRIVES 180 HP.
Or a VOLVO PENTA AD31/DP (160 HP?)

It all depends on what you want to take into account. Costs and availability in you locality of spares/servicing would be one of my first thoughts. A lot of people have a srong brand loyalty.
Any modern engine will keep on performing if its looked after and serviced at the proper intervals. Feed it clean fuel and regular oil and filters and you should be on the right track. You dont say what boat it will be going in, what sort of power requirements does it have, is it a planning hull or displacement
