Many of you may already know about the new MDL marina in Sant Carles De La Rapita, Catalonia, Spain. What you may not know is that it has its own chat Forum www.scmchat.com which was set up, and is hosted by, Hurricane in December, 2008. Several YBW Forum members already contribute to it. It will shortly celebrate its first anniversary!

We have enjoyed an excellent year in this new marina, our first venture into the Med. We spent nearly six months there and have visited Majorca, Columbretes and several local marinas.

Before moving my boat to the Med., I had the usual concerns: cost of transportation, flights, security, dockmasters and marina staff, cost of maintenance, social scene, exchange rates, matriculation tax, fouling, language, etc., etc. But I can honestly say that it has been a breeze and an extremely enjoyable experience.

The annual cost, taking into consideration cheaper berthing fee's, cheap flights, car hire, etc., has for me worked out just the same as when I was berthed in Torquay. The only difference is that the weather has been excellent and we have used the boat a hell of a lot more (take a look at the reduced quality iPhone images taken in SCM earlier this week), we could easily have gone out 5 days out of 7.

So, for anyone interested in a venture of this kind, I can wholeheartedly recommend it!

Well done to MDL and to Hurricane and a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you all!

"How's liddle ol' England?"

"Still foggy and cold"

So went the American jibe in the 80's coffee ad for Nescafe.

But really it is - foggy and cold almost everywhere. Thanks for putting those pics up John, they light up the rather dark days and perhaps also, they confirm to me where it is that I should have my next boat.

I'm glad that the whole experience has turned out well for you, may you enjoy boating and Sant Carles for many years.

Likewise, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

Dave

It's still fairly expensive though, not much if any cheaper than Barcelona.
Well I was quoted anyway, didnt get any kind of deal.

well done John !
the bleu flighbridge boat in the last two pics,
do you know what make it is ?
I thought a Rodman, but I believe its something else

Hi John,
No regrets here either with our move to Alcudiamar Mallorca. Where our boat should have been all along but kids and work prevented.
Lots of spaces in the Marina now (10m ish) compared to even last year and even some of the bigger berths are now empty - unknown. Does make me a bit angry to read the continued hype about 'berth shortages' that keep getting run in the mags - do think this is perhaps berth broker fuelled to keep up demand. Would accept that at some sizes 12m+ its still true but at 10m no problems.
We did Menorca in mid august and had choice of berths in between some superb overnight anchoring. Very enjoyable round Mallorca cruise in company in June and lots of other overnights and day trips - another good boating year in the sun.
Our berthing is double previous (Hull !) at e5880 (10x3.5 with a bit of tolerance) but well worth it !
Nice to hear about your forum / social contact, its taken some time to get to know folks around our marina.
How did you go with the med strength antifoul products - any better ??
Richard

Hi John,

We did get some nice weather didn't we, well after the gales subsided!

Nice thread though John, are you trying to get a better deal on your berthing rates??? MDL must have loved it! you should be telling them they have got a lot more work to do to get it right and in the meantime, shouldn't we be getting a reduction in rates!!

Barry

John

Thanks for the photos.
We've just got back from a weekend in Yarmouth with a large group of individuals from these forums. It seems to be a bit of a tradition now to go to the Yarmouth Town Carols evening just before Christmas.

Boy - was it cold.
North winds - blowing straight into the harbour but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

But being boatless, I was thinking what it would have been like in SC so thanks for letting us know that at least you were in warm sunshine!!!

OK - I am reliably informed (from my spies in SCM and just checked the website) that the Blue F/B boat in the pictures is an Altair Zafir 42 with Twin Volvo D6 370HP. You can also have the Twin Volvo IPS 500hp engine option - nice boat.....

MONT: Jury still out on Med anti-foul products, but will post images when Buster is lifted for its annual service in Feb/Mar. I have inspected several boats during the year, most hull anti-fouling products seem to work OK. It's the sterngear/shafts/props on most boats that seem to suffer. One new boat had its hull and shafts/props coated in Coppercoat, we were eager to inspect, but even that was fouled when we lifted it in the summer.

MDL have been pro-active, cheap and efficient lifts with pressure wash. I am keen to see how the Seaguardian has performed on the hull next time out!

Actually, John, we were both there when she was lifted and indeed, the hull had been Coppercoated but I was particularly interested in the shafts and props etc but it turned out that they didnt have anything on them. And that was why they were fouled. In fact, I thought that the Coppercoat on the hull was pretty good. Not good enough to change me from normal antifoul though.

I still havent yet made my mind up on next year's treatment - I'm sure it will be normal A/F for the hull (I might change A/F manufacturers though) but I still dont know what to do on the metalwork - I'm starting to get cold feet with the Coppercoat idea.

I've recently been thinking of applying something that actually comes off easily - with our cheap lifts it might actually be better to have a coating that assists the cleaning process. Perhaps a spray on lanolin that can be squirted on just before a relaunch. Not really thought this one through though.

Yes it is a Altair zafir 42
whenever you see a "for sale" sign on that boat,
don't hesitate to contact me ;)
thanks again for the info

Info on Sant Carles Marina

Hi,

We;re looking to bring our yacht out to the marina in September. What's the sailing like Autumn, Winter and Spring as this is when we would want to do most of our sailing. We know it's not going to be boiling hot but that will suit us.

Also what's the marina like in Winter?

Would appreciate any feedback.

Many Thanks

Kathleen Helliwell:

Well done John. Sounds like its the Med life for you from now on and no going back. Just to redress the balance a bit, I'm sitting in my boat right now at the other end of the Med in the Adriatic and it's chucking it down and cold with it. Still tomorrow is sunny and warm so normal service will be resumed

PS your pics don't work for me

That's because the post is over two years old :D
Thats a disgrace:mad: Don't you think it should be a forum rule that people tell you how old their post is before they post it?

where are you based now Mike ?
Bart at this very moment we are in Monfalcone in Italy right in the NE end of the Adriatic where the boat has spent the winter. Its just easier for me to get here in the winter when there are no flights to Split. Tomorrow we head south again for the summer and, inshallah, we will be in Frapa near Split for Friday evening, where we will spend the summer. I intend to be back in Monfalcone in November. Yes I know that heading north for the winter sounds wrong but it has worked for me:)
