Have all MDL berth holders received the offer of the Harbormaster remote monitoring and control system? My first thoughts were this is real armchair sailing and more cash for MDL but I am sure the subscription package being offered at about £100 per year will interest the MOBOs and may be the yachties.

Harbormaster allows for the monitoring of up to 14 inputs such as batteries, bilge pumps, intrusion and GPS position. It will contact you by telephone, fax, e-mail or SMS immediately there is an alarm.

It will be interesting to get the insurance company aspect on this. Lower increases in premiums if installed?

Any thoughts from other MDL members? Any experience of the system by anyone, is it reliable what is the false alarm rate?

It can only be an improvement on their 'man' monitoring when a boat can have a 7' piece of rubbing stake ripped off and no one see it as happened to me last year!

But then again I don't keep my boat with MDL anymore - I now pay significantly less for a better service with a harbour master who cares.

My boat's too old and worn and lacking in electrical systems to benefit from the monitoring service described. However I have to take issue with the poor press MDL usually gets on these pages - the service I receive at Woolverstone Marina is first class in every respect. I have never had cause to even privately or silently reproach the staff there. Friendly, helpful, go-the-extra-mile, unfailingly polite, totally dedicated to our and our boats' welfare. It may sound like I have shares but I don't; just credit where it's due.
Regards, Mudhook.

Fowey harbour charge an extra £1.00 a day when yacht is unoccupied, for "keeping an eye on it"
I assume then that if you are on board they ignore it?

yes - and so they should. you would no doubt complain vigorously at the extra £1 per day cost of having someone watch you all the time. and do you really need watching?

i can think of a few aquaintances who might well pay £1 per day to be absolutely sure they werent being watched, and reported back to swmbo.
