My oil pressure switch has started to weep oil. At the moment I am trying to sort it out but if I have to get a new one do I have to go to Volvo or is their an alternative type I can use. Any info. would be gratefully recieved. Thanks.

hhi....do u have a number on the old one??....i own some motor spares shops and many of the things such as oil filter...air filters...fuel filters....temp sensors....etc etc....will cross over to car parts. so long as the pressure and the tread are the same it shouldn t be a prob.

Now in my 10th year with a Halfords oil pressure switch on my MDIIC & not a moments problem. VERY VERY much cheaper than the Volvo rip off - as with most spares. Also running with Halfords temperature guage, oil filters, belts, piston rings, valve springs. Need I go on?

Gosh you must have a much better branch of Halfords than our local one!

Re: VicS Halfords

Probably not Vic, nor far from you either.
But not even Volvo invent new or unique parts, a little bit of research will enable you to substitute reasonably priced & functional components for the high priced and allegedly unique items that are commonly bought. Much of the Volvo range (amongst others) are components re-boxed from other manufacturers. Join the revolution against rip-off marine products, buy wisely.

Maybe a stupid question but what details do I need and which one do I buy. I noticed a make and some figures like 0.5 and 0.1 would this do. Could you remember which one you used to get me started. Thanks.

Thanks for the info I will be down at the boat on the weekend and will take any details I can see and I will get back to you. I have also replied to maxxi on the same topic so it looks promising. Thanks

Hi petersto.

Not a silly question, that's what the Forum is for, exchange of information - no need to be embarrassed, we are all meeting challenges for the first time.

No I don't remember the details but, it should be entirely possible to remove your oil pressure switch without creating an oil gusher, and take it to your nearest motor factors who will be even cheaper than Halfords, and who will match it for you.

The thread must match, and as this is a taper thread there are no gaskets or 'O'rings to worry about. The other consideration is the activation pressure for the switch, which should be stamped into the body, and from memory I believe this was circa 7psi. Also the top electrical connection should match but is far from critical, from memory this is a single wire with the ground via the engine block.

All in all it should be about 10 minutes work and under a fiver.
