Does anyone know if it is ok to disconnect the water intake from the saildrive on a Volvo Penta MD7A /110S unit and introduce cooling water from a traditional skin fitting and strainer. Access to the valve on my saildrive unit is impossible. Has anyone done this successfully ?. Any comments appreciated.

Hi John
The answer to your question is yes. I had an overheating problem last season (same boat, same engine). It turned out to be the water chamber in the saildrive leg had become corroded and wasn't allowing an adequate flow of water. I turned off the cock on the top of the unit, fitted a new skin fitting forward and to starboard of the engine with an inline filter mounted high in the engine compartment and connected with new hoses to the manifold pipes. Problem cured and the setup works really well (and its cheap).
Good luck.

Thanks for that

Job under way. Nice to be reassured by your experience.

Should launch this weekend.

Cheers
