Anybody know where I can find a rebuild kit for the fresh water (circulation) pump? I believe the part No. is 875372, but it seems this is no longer available or 90% of the bits to rebuild it!
The pump has just started to leak coolant, so engine running time is very, very short and if it can't be fixed then it seems I will need to replace my engine!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody want to comment on what might happen if went to a totally salt water cooling system on the engine? I really can't afford a new or reconditioned engine in the next 12 months.

Will it work, and how would I best go about it?

Cheers all

Do a search answers for this are here from a couple of months ago

There is place in the midlands that will help if you can sort out logistics.

Salt water is a NONO! Too much alloy in heads etc ,

The complete pump is available from Keypart ... I'll not tell you the price although its probably less than a new engine!

MarineParts Europe do list some of the pump parts but is not clear from the parts diagrams quite what forms the seal. Listed as part of the impeller I think but NLA

Still not sure why you can't run on a full salt water system? Most marine diesels are raw water cooled these days.

In any case should I need to go down this route then it means I can't replace the pump so I'd be replacing the engine in any case. If I got another 3-5 years out of it then it's fine by me as I'll time to save up for a newer one.

I'm getting deja vu. Didn't you have this same problem about 4 years ago? Didn't you replace the engine? You didn't put another MD21B in did you?!

Really stupid idea……….but it might just work.

Get a bog standard 240 volt central heating circulator / pump.

Get a 12 volt to 240 volt inverter suitable for the above pump

Cobble a blank flange with a connection piece to replace the existing water pump

Connect in the central heating circulator

Make sure all 240 volt connections are splash/water proof.

Connect Inverter to output of Alternator

Fill with water and go sailing (well hopefully)

Exactly the opposite. Raw water cooled engines are a rarity these days. Think the only one in production is the Yanmar 9hp 1GM. Otherwise engines are fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger. Many reasons - able to run hotter, easier to control temperature, longer life because no salt water in waterways and able to use lighter materials.

I think you have teh wrong part number. I have posted against your other thread also. Keypart quote this number as teh fresh water recirculation pump and have one in stock.

Keypart.com

Circulation Pump Assembly

Part Ref: 826870
Ex. VAT: £500.00
Inc. VAT: £600.00

its still a lot cheaper than a new engine and the rebuild seems not worthwhile at that price if you then find a part like a shaft is knackered anyway. Better to be sailing.

Sorry - realise someone below has already said so... silly me!

For information DB Marine offer a remanufacturing option, using your pump. This costs £174 plus an optional upgrade to a ceramic seal which is then guaranteed for the life of the pump.

With shipping costs from and to the Caribbean you are probably looking at circa £250 which is considerably cheaper than the Keypart option of £500

Good luck

Cheers for all the answers, I'm working on it from a few different angles and seem to be moving forward.

Yes, I did have this problem in 2008, and a very kind forum member sold me his spare pump. This pump after spending time in the Med' and up various rivers has done 1,530 hours!!! I think its a bit tired now.

I would not replace this engine with another MD21 as you can't get the bits for them - a nice new Perkins would be far better!
