Hi. It is now obvious I need to replace my engine mounts which are I believe the original black rubber cylinder type from Volvo. I have read though that for a heavy diesel engine like mine these are perhaps not strong enough for the forces involved. Also, they are almost twice the price of say Vetus replacements. Can anyone reccommend some replacement mounts that would be a better alternative to the Volvo ones? Also, I may fit an R & D flexible coupling but have concerns about simply sliding the prop shaft back and fitting it. There is plenty of room between the rudder skeg and the prop but should I be worried about further probs with an additional 40mm of prop sticking out of the stern tube? Thanks.

Regarding the latter point I believe (i.e. I was told..) that the maximum propshaft extension between the end of Cutless bearing and the start of the propellor boss should be 1.5 times shaft diameter. More than that and you risk fast Cutless bearing wear. Certainly there are many boats around with that much extension e.g. those fitted with rope strippers.

Yes Steve, I spoke with R & D and they told me the length outside of the final bearing to be no longer than the diameter of the shaft! It already looks about two times that! Perhaps I have to wait until the winter to seriously do the job. First I will change the engine mounts, perhaps the flexible coupling is not needed after this!

How will the flexible coupling be attached to the prop shaft? Will it be possible shorten the shaft at the inboard end. It might take a "minute or two" with a hack saw if you have the access
