Flicking back through my newly acquired boat paperwork I notice that the previous owner had the boat part 1 registered though this expired in September 2015. Is it necessary to reregister the boat, is it expensive, and what are the benefits?

I believe you can renew the existing registration within 12 months of it expiring (although that may be different if the ownership has been transferred) - outside that time it classes as a new registration which would need to be re-measured and a new number given.

Little real benefits but it does mean you boat as a name and not just a number :)

When you bought the boat you should have registered the change in ownership - or if you bought through a broker he should have done that for you. It is not compulsory to register the change but sensible to do so.

I assume the Bill of Sale is the MCA type and pretty sure you will still be able to register the change. Give the registry a call for advice.

I have just done exactly what your on about, boat new to me and part 1 just expired.
So registered her in my name and re named her at the same time.
It cost £125 ( ish )and lasts for 5 years.
You can then also apply for a historical document showing you all names ports & owners the boat has had if she has all was been on register.
This was another £32 I think.
