I have just had a notice from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency telling me that I have to renew my boat's registration. The fee for this is £49.

25 years ago the then owner fitted a new engine but did not inform MCA [or whatever they were called then]. The boat has changed hands twice since then and still no-one has notified MCA of the engine change. Until today that is, when muggins decided to "fess up" and tell them. Price of my honesty? An extra £37 fee for amending the details on the registry! Total of £86 for someone to spend a few moments typing some data into a computer and posting a certificate to me.

Rip-off Britain or what?

Good thing you had not changed address or wanted to change the port of registry or the name of the vessel. that would have been your boat budget blown /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Keeping a register is clearly an expensive business.

They managed to spend £1.062million on it last year (Segmental analysis)

The likes of us must not have paid them enough however as they made a loss of £132,000 from their registration work.

What does Gordon think about that?

More taxes on the way.

If it takes them five weeks to issue a piece of laminated paper, identincal to the last one save the end date, I'm not surprised they're losiing money.
