Hello all!

My daughter is just starting out in her quest to become a professional skipper and she needs some advise. Eventually she will acquire the MCA ratings, after going through the YM certs (Dad's requirements! )

She is looking for a logbook to document her seatime. Does she need to start with an MCA/IYT approved logbook? Will the RYA logbook work?

She has crewed for me a few times on weekly training sails and also on deliveries so she is getting some good experience.

Which MCA ticket is she aiming for? If Master 200 / OOW 500 Yachts / code vessels, then there is no requirement to document sea service (at this moment anyway), as long as all other criteria are met i.e minimum YM offshore and several other tickets.

More in the link below. You can also phone them for clarification.

One other bit of advice - for YM commercial (which is a pre-requisite for most of the MCA yacht / code tickets) you need various other bits and pieces i.e VHF, First aid etc. Be aware that RYA versions will not cut it with the MCA and she will have to redo most of them with an MCA badge to gain her Notice of Eligibility, so if she doesn't already have a radio ticket, do the GMDSS version, if she doesn't have First Aid or Sea Survival do the STCW versions etc.
