MBY What happened.

No, I read the whole thing this evening! most of the bulk is taken up with ads of new super yachts and I can't afford them so skipped those pages! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As many do , I subscribe to PBO and MBM , or I did up to today . I don't pay a subscription to end up with ads filling so much of the magazines that I might as well chuck the whole lot in the bin . So subs will be cancelled and I'll go back to buying one when I see something interesting to read , not one of my posts . Maybe they'll learn one day

268 Pages - The cat still isn't quite the same shape, there's a dent in the floor, and the postman should be out of hospital next week...

I often think that but then if you actually count the editorial pages this never differs or not a lot from what I can make out? Look on the bright side the more paper you get the better value your subscription is?

I dont agree with you.
I know there are loads of adds in it but there are also several good articles in there as well.

I was particularly enraged by the article on page 26 "MAIB Targets Boaters"
If this is the way that government departments are behaving, we need to have guys like MBY pointing it out.
Perhaps someone needs to start a separate thread on this one.

Another good article - boating in the Bristol Channel - just about to put my feet up and read it.

And then there's the short report on Scilly.

And thats before any of the boat tests/reports.

All in all - a good issue - IMHO

I have to say that the mags have improved a lot over the last year and this bumper issue is great - ads are informative and they pay for most of the mag so i never begrudge the publisher trying to make a bob or two - thats what it is all about.

No ads - no mag - its that simple, so please stop the moaning /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You're quite right. It's the same as people moaning about threads on here that apparently shouldn't be. Read the stuff that interests you.
As long as there's good editorial it's a good read.

with pleasure , having now cleared out all the excess paperwork in my copy of PBO , I was happy to see a four page article on the East coast , starting on page 28 , followed by fifteen pages of adverts . I can't help but think that these adverts pay for the printing and distribution costs , so surely the magazine itself with all the additional scrap paper enclosed , should be free . If not , what am I paying for ?

You have a choice to buy or not buy.
Adverts are essential to a magazine - without them none would make a profit and survive - your sub only partly covers the cost of production - the minor part of it.
Taking a biased sample like you have is meaningless - each mag will have so much editorial to so much advertising space - if that does not please you then stop buying it.

Adsverts have an informative role to play - I find some interesting and ignore most but that is what its all about.

This issue was a very good one with lots of interesting editorial stuff but iIguess some are going to moan no matter what is produced.

By all means criricise the editorial content etc but not the basic economic mechanism by which mags survive - thats a bit like asking the world to stop because you want to get of! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I quite enjoy leafing through the pages deciding which would be my next boat if my lottery numbers ever come up. It's far better than watching Eastenders which SWMBO insists on watching.

Yes Its nice to dream now and again! but the fact is that its not likely to ever happen and it just makes me discontented with what I do own, so best not to bother really! lol.

MBY sounds like a good issue. I think IPC will have to keep up their standards. My understanding is the costs of producing a magazine have slashed and consequently the free publications have been improving all the time. Boat news I received lately looks excellent for a freebie. They wont need too many advertisers to cover costs. Good for the consumer to see competition arriving and perhaps advertising costs might come under more pressure.
