Just sitting down to dinner at Nick_Pam Towers when the mobile rang.

A nice gentleman on the other end of the call told me he was from Motor Boats Monthly magazine, thanked me for entering their competitions, and offered me the opportunity to take 3 copies for £1 in a promotional offer.

Since I was planning to replace my Motor Boat & Yachting subscription with an MBM subscription anyway, I jumped at said offer....

At this point, said gentleman promised to post me some details and the next copy of the magazine.....but then asked me to give him my bank account details over the telephone so that he could set up the agreement......which I declined to do!!!

I infer from this that the offer will probably turn into a subscription if I do not actively cancel it - which is fine because I want the magazine....

What worries me, however, is that as I pointed out to him, I could have called him up claiming to be from MBM and asking him for his bank account details, with no satisfactory means of proving identity....

I wonder how many people will get a call in the next few days and blindly give their details over the phone.

Now I am reasonably certain that it was a genuine call, but you would have thought that in this day and age, the organisers of these sort of things would think more carefully about the concerns people have over identity theft and plan accordingly.

I got my call last night, even though I am sure I ticked everything to make sure I wouldn't be contacted - maybe the powers on here can say whether there is a box I missed ticking.

Anyway, I was in the middle of my dinner so I politely said "No".

I am on TPS so I don't have to take calls during my dinner. I appreciate ybw, but please don't call me trying to sell me subs.

I had the call last week, and declined as I had no idea who the caller really was. If they want to make an offer, they have the e-mail address from the competition entry.

I assumed, maybe stupidly, that the offer was legit and gave my details. Maybe Richard could confirm that the deal is actually from MBM?

I got a call at about 8pm - bit of a cheek I thought.
I was offered 3 copies of MBM's for £1. Doh - I'm already a subscriber /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif!!
Was then offered MB&Y but declined when asked for my bank details. Realised that I'd probably forget to cancel the DD after 3 months, as well.

It is legit and is done through our Subscriptions Marketing Department and has nothing to do with me!

If you do have any questions regarding this you can direct this to

Yes in this day and age giving your details over the phone can seem a little unusual but its common practice and still goes on widely.

As for TPS our lists are screened monthly.

Thats all I am saying on the subject, have a good weekend!

I would certainly not give any bank details to some one who called me unless there was a good way of verifying they were who they said they were. Giving such details when I have made the call to a published number is on the other hand as suggested quite normal.
