MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

The questioned posed was "Is Med boating all its cracked up to be"

The "Yes" was a reasoned balanced argument by a Mr M. Finch (Oooo very formal) based on his experiences both in the UK and in the Med. However the "No" was argued by someone who had never tried Med boating, but just didn't fancy it!

So from that I take it that MBM's extensive reseach couldn't actually find anyone who had tried Med boating and not liked it, which answers the question quite nicely I suppose.

Cor this is my second grumpy post today, I'm not sure why because I'm actually quite demob happy.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

I'm with you on this.........

There again, there's a return flight ticket to the Med, from dated today until New Year, with our names on it, sitting on the table.....so perhaps we must like it!!!!!!!!!

Happy Christmas.......from "Freya" in the Med......... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

I've just finished a phone call with MartynK and he's freezing cold washing the car.

He is already making plans for 2008 in the Med.

FWIW, home gives us more boat time.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

I know that Mr Finch. He's a twat and you don't want to believe a word he says

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

Well Martyn Ive done both & the med wins hands down. None of that silly yachts v motorboat snobery, no rip tides & overfalls to worry about, ports that sell fuel. petrol & diesel every 4 or 5 miles & of course the weather.
Merry christmas.Nat

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

I'm amazed they managed to sober him up long enough to get a coherent sentence out of him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

not at the moment yo would'nt ..................its hissing down strong winds and really quite cold, down to 13-14 degrees.......brrrr

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

That quiet little secluded anchorage all to your self. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
CAB4SECLUDED.jpg

All this after a 4am start and 2 hours with your knees wedged up against the seat in front only to find a bill for 2000 euros waiting for you at the harbour office for stuff that needed doing but as you are over thousand miles away,Pedro or Jean-Pierre or Arnaldo or whoever has had to do it,while making a mess inside the boat and going thru your drinks locker. If your really lucky the afternoon wind may allow you to get out past the marina entrance or failing any wind you can just nicely boil under the canvas in the 35c heat and pray for the sun to go down to make life bearable in only 12 hours time.It will almost make the 12000 euros to fit A/C a bargain.
Stick to the UK,Proper weather, actual tides, different stuff on every coast and fit British wimmin ................. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Not forgetting that last flight back arriving at 1.30am local time, finding your car and having to be up for work in 4 hours time.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

Think I know him too, always thought he was a decent type but as i trust your judgement I'll have to agree with you.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

agree and disagree.
as regards 2 hour flight + another 2 for transfers and another 2 for hanging round airports = 6 hours. i.e. about how long it used to take me to drive to Poole. Can't read or have a drink on the way either. no contest!
As regards too hot - spent nearly 4 months on the boat down there this summer, was honestly never too hot once. (no a/c either)if you get a tad warm - jump over the side for half an hour. no contest!

As regards lack of secluded anchorages, OK know what you mean, so we are decamping from S of F to greek islands neaxt season - should sort that one out.

As regards the wind - yes OK it can blow but at least its a warm wind. Still shorts 'n t shirts in a gale - try that back home.

As regards dodgy boat engineers - that one's for ever, wherever you are. 1000 miles away by plane or 200 by car - what's the difference. I'd rather get ripped off in the sun than in the rain. In all honesty have found better service overall in south of France than England.

I will never return!

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

A balanced view from a Mr M Finch? Havent seen the article yet, but not the same person who had a rant at the Med only a couple of months ago surely....

We've managed 4 trips out to our boat this summer. Whitsun week at the end of May found us in north Majorca; most days were very breezy and the evenings were cold enough to warrant long trousers and a thick jumper. I managed another long weekend at the end of June and whilst the temperature was warmer, it rained on 2 days out of 5

or was it....

Dangerous critters are everywhere. There are more mosquitos in the Med than the UK and they just love juicy British flesh so get used to plastering yourself with repellent every evening. The sea is often infested with jellyfish so, even if you think they’re not going to hurt, the thought of swimming is off putting. Then, some of the beaches have colonies of sea urchins so you have to wear shoes for paddling. Maybe Southend beach is’nt so bad after all

Mind you despite all that Mike waved the flag for the 'yes' vote, so the above comments are probably a ploydesigned to stop anyone else coming to the Med, by frightening them off, so leaving more mooring spaces and achorages free for 2008 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Scuse me matey not all Marinas the same, we look after customers boat and do repairs, we use John as English as you and me and honest as the day is long.

Probably more English than the boat carers/repairers in UK, their more likely to be called boris or something ending in ski.......................

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

Clive I thought you used Alberto for engineering work. He is as English as I am Spanish, mind you he is a nice guy, shame about the smelly dog.

Just been down to Marbella, the torrential rain that we have had for the past 2 days has washed roads away, filled up under-passes etc. It is very bad out there. Glad I was in the ML else I would have been stuck on a few occassions.

Forecast for rain to continue for next day or so....

And to make matters worse it isnt snowing up at Sierra Nevada... AHHHH.

Anyway give me the Med over the East coast of England or come to think of it any part of the UK any rain or sun day.

Must go for a cerveza with Pedro now. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

Hi Lozz with regard boat repairs its my John I use naturally.

Now with regard engine stuff I dont do engines. You are thinking of the Marinas one man and his dog Roberto & Pepe. He is a free lance engineer, and pretty good at that too.
Come to think of it he has a Spanish name was born in south american and is in fact dutch? The dogs 100% Spanish though :~)

Do you know if the rain has effected the road to Malaga airport? only Phils flying later today and is naturally being taken to Malaga by car leaving about 5pm.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

"but at least it's a warm wind" - we almost froze our nuts off sailing back from N. Corsica one May - it was blowing a hoolie with snow falling and sticking on the higher ground. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

why is everybody on here coming out with extreme bad weather stuff for the med as if English weather is always perfect. I do know the med is different in winter to summer. but in summer the weather is "usually" rather nice.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

"English weather is always perfect."
Doubt anyone is going to claim that the climate here is perfick,English weather is English weather, always changable, different and with a nice set of complete seasons.
Its the Med is perfect myth thats needs critical examination. It can be far to hot in the summer and the weather can be just as crap as the UK in the winter,a few winter holidays in Cyprus,Portugal,Spain,Balarics and most of the Greek islands will soon prove that to the even the most optimistic Med fan.
There can be no spontaneity about boating 1000 miles away down there either, book your tickets 2/3 months in advance and you might, just might, get your flights less than £100 with taxes and dont forget to add £60 for the airport car park and add 40 euros for the taxi to the marina.Decide to go tommorrow and its £250.00.You will need a breakfast and to stock up on mags/newspapers and a novel or two for the wife, whoops there goes another £50.00 quid.It is not cheap to go there frequently and if you only go for a fortnight each year whats the point.
It of course goes without saying that the area has great things going for it but better than UK boating B******x just different. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.IMHO.

Re: MBM Med Boating \"You the Jury\"

My point was simply that highlighting weather extremes doesn't give a true overall picture.
Also relative costs of getting there depend on how far you are from your boat in the UK and your personal circumstances. My 5- 6 hours drive to Poole and back used to cost me around £70 in petrol alone, not to mention wear & tear etc. I averaged £30- £50 for flights including airpost taxes & charges. A train to within walking distance of the boat cost another £8.00 each way. It all comes down to personal preferences of course, and to argue that one is better than the other is quite pointless really. Your right - the med is not perfect, I just know which I prefer.
