You have to make your own decisions about who is saying what.
When you read internet news, you see many view points on the same subject, and sometimes have 500 to choose between. Buying a paper, you only have one viewpoint.

Praps thats why I buy a Paper.
500 is too much info for Me!
"Man bites Dog"
"Don't go afloat look at the Weather" report .
"Ospreys win again"
Then Me head is filled.
Don't believe the First two anyway.
So the next 497 are irrelavent!

You learn to scan, and just take in those reports that are useful or relevant, or possibly interesting.

Using the internet rather than papers is going to mean that peeps used to paper and tv or radio news are going to have to reconsider how they receive their news, but young kids who never had that historical upbringing will take to it far easier.

It's not difficult to get the news feeds you want or need, Honest!

The difficult bit is getting the one's you actually want. Once you have them, it's easy to obtain local, national, and international news. That you are interested in.

MBM plops though the letter box, along with envelopes with Windows.

Just as well, or you'd go into a lather about the use of the helm in the new section - MBM Skipper - about boat handling. Just to quote from the first section "Turning a boat around in it's own length is one of the most important handling techniques, as not only does it enable you to execute a smart U-turn in a tight spot, but it forms the foundation of almost every other manoeuvre. Too get the boat to turn in a confined area requires the use of both the helm and the engine"

I'll not quote the rest to you, suggest you go and buy a copy - you never know you might learn something? Hmmm maybe not /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif You'll only disagree - again /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just so you know, we didn't contribute to the article, it was somebody else who got paid £50!!!!!

Re: A scientific analysis of editorial content

I have a cruising article in the current May edition and absolutely no factual errors had been introduced which has happened before with editing.

The secret with a mag that will appeal to a greater number of people is to have as great a variety of articles as possible in it. Too much of the same, or similar, instils boredom and frustration. Variety is the spice of life! Move this way, move that way. Stay still - you die!

Re: A scientific analysis of editorial content

I think MBM is aiming itself at the casual boater or people new to boating therefore it can do nothing else but alienate regular boat owners who see the mag as simplistic and basic in its reviews and tests. This presents a big problem as MBM will undoubtably have a ver large turnover of subscribers who buy the mag for a while and then move on to something more meaty.

MBY, in the last few years (since the change of editor I think) has changed ever so slightly and for the betterment of the mag as a whole by being that bit more practical in its outlook without spending pages and pages on £750,000 boats. But - the boat tests are far more in depth, far more thoughful into the useability of the boat and I find a far more boaty based review rather than a layman's review. The specs, layup, dead rises, fuel consumption, noise figures etc. all make the reviews more accomplished and worth keeping.

PBO is just excellent for the practical boat owner who has the skills to do the work though some of the electrical installs in the photos have been rather wanting for tidy installations of late. The different little projects like fitting a freeze box, gelcoat repairs, etc. all add to an excellent mag with many many great articles from boat owners, crusing logs, and not too much of the saily reviews to put motorboaters off the mag.

So for me, you can leave your river boat monthly on the shelf and clutch onto MBY and PBO til next month's intallment.
