'Mayfly' rescued off California

Apologies if this has already been posted:

UK reg'd yacht Mayfly, and its 78 year old male single-handing skipper was reported rescued off southern California.

Had set off from Japan in June, but light winds left him short on provisions.

Found this bit interesting.

The Coast Guard apparently delivered rations to the Mayfly via an “Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System vessel, the motor vessel Tamesis, to provide rations to the distressed mariner,” the press release said. ” The Tamesis arrived on scene and delivered the rations with no request for additional assistance.” It’s not clear exactly when this was (nor are we entirely clear on the Coast Guard’s use of automated vessels to assist mariners).

Hang on; let’s translate back out of the dreadful journalese:

The request for provisions was made on AMVER (the Automated Mutual Vessel Emergency Response System) and was picked up and responded to by a USCG cutter.

This bit caught my eye, but I do not think it means what they say, got a vision of an Amazon drone dropping a food parcel to him.

It’s not clear exactly when this was (nor are we entirely clear on the Coast Guard’s use of automated vessels to assist mariners).
