I was wondering whether any one could point me in the direction of a new mast in the south west area. I live in Dorset.
I was thinking of going aluminium Is this a crime?
My gp14 is sail number 787 and is a 50s boat I would like to put a wooden mast back but I am worried about the same happening again.

Bring on your many comments please!

I reckon a new solid Sitka Spruce mast would be just as strong as an alu one and not as expensive as you might imagine. Try Nobel Masts in Bristol. They recently re-made my spinny pole - I resisted going Alu on that. They did a great job and it is as light as a feather.

If the old mast was original - don't go aluminium!!! 50 years from wood is not that bad.

Your wooden mast is probably only delaminating from 50 year old water based glue. Take the whole thing apart and re-glue with epoxy. Collars seem to make most new wooden dinghy masts. Old Frank

Hi Mark

Speak to Jeremy Freeland at Collars. He recently made a 30ft mast for my Hillyard (moored Dorset) in Douglas Fur - nice job, nice guys to deal with and best price I could get.

I have a wooden GP 14 mast that i rescued from the Yacht club bonfire some years ago it is grey with age but should clean up a treat, it was an insurance replacement about 40 years ago and has never been stepped, if you are interested send me a PM

As the mast is not in good condition, in my opinion you really have nothing to lose by attempting a repair. as you say just rout out the soft wood, but I would extend the repair quite a bit, to spread the load, and scarf the joints in. Use epoxy glue with microfibres for strength. This should be pretty strong and will at least get you through until a replacement can be found.

We had a new mast built by Noble after the previous (original) mast on our 31' 9 ton Falmouth Pilot fell over the side - as far as I know, they were fantastic (they had to take the new mast to France as well as the boat was there when the old one fell off).

My No 1 son had a new mast made by Collars last winter for his 9 ton Hillyard. They did an excellent job and at half the price quoted by Hillyards.
