The helpful advice from Pat Manley on cold starting a VP 2002 using the decompression lever reads "lift the lever to the verticle position ... turn the engine over and when turning as fast as it can move the decompression lever fully in the anti-clockwise direction ..... then close the decompression lever fully and the other cylinder should fire". Question if the engine is the 2001 do you move the lever anticlockwise as above or simply return it to its normal rest position (i.e. clockwise) from the open position? I recall starting dumpers on building sites in this manner (+ hand cranking) on cold mornings many moons ago.
