Am I alone in thinking that the May YM is a pretty good read? Excellent article about shackles and swivels - things I need to seriously think about - I think I recognised my nice shiny stainless steel swivel as being the worst of the bunch with a breaking load of less than 2 tonnes.

Also usual mixture of witty, informative, and reflective stuff from Purves, Cunliffe, and all the usual suspects, as well as nice piece about west coast anchoring from the Forum's own Mac McDiarmid.

The 100 year stuff's fascinating. Still reading it.

Well done!

Sgeir,
if you are looking to win a bottle of hooch for best (grovliest)letter of the month, you need to write to them direct

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Damn it Jim, I'll need to work at this.

When one of YM's competitors was pretty crap, (you know grossly inaccurate maps, photos round the wrong way etc etc), I used to toy with the idea of making up letters about imaginary subjects and issues for the fabled bottle of Pulteney. Never did though - not for any reason of principle, but too scared of being exposed as a fraud.

Might be worth revisiting as a team effort - trolling for whisky.

I was really disappointed with this issue, thought there was too much back-slapping and not enough meat. As said, previous was better.

Ah, but Brian liked the April issue because it featured a Malbec 240 on the front cover and gave a full test! He sells 'em. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Aha. I can see sense there. But then it seemed like a decent boat and I am all for new regions getting in on the boat building market.
Not seen any Mongolian yawls or Bornean barques yet. Maybe the June issue.

How many do you write?
Seems like the excerpts from in here followed Twisterken. (Or was it someone else- not at home right now).

er, no, they were all from me, and published as such. I was taking the mick about an earlier article where a boat manufacturer said that they only took new graduates from a specific university. So, following the very same logic, i suggested that the magazine ONLY published leters all from one reader. The editor who was a great sport went for it, but unfortunately some other people went a bit ape er bonkers.

Unfortunately it was the very next month that they introduced the idea of giving out bottles of stuff for each letter, dammit.

I'd give up trying to explain things or be helpful. Newbies seem to be very ungrateful about any type of genuinely helpful advice based on experience, whether real or forum based knowledge. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd be interested to know the stories behind some of the editorial changes. Why, for instance, did Sarah Norbury move on? Why was James Jermain only Editor for 2 years? And why did MG only manage 40 years? ( /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) I'm not interested in salacious gossip, but it would provide a bit of depth and colour to what is otherwise a rather dry account of succession

I've only just got hold of mine, as Mrs Beancounter nabbed it as soon as it arrived and pored over it. Since she's never so much as flicked through it before, I'm taking that as an encouraging sign... (or should I be worried?)
