Suggest you buy a new Bavaria 36 from Opal (the Agent). They are on offer at £72k. The length for comparison with other boats is 38'. It is very fast, sails well and the quality is excellent. Moreover they have a very good owners association with frequent rallies. Have just got back from a super weekend in the Solent.

Seeing numerous quality issues with BAVs discussed across Europe, I am not sure your suggestion is meant serious ;-)

In any case, I would go for a 3-4 year old boat, where the previous owner has tested and possibly fixed the usual smaller ( or bigger) problems.

Fast is also fairly relative a description - you have to tweak and adjust quite a bit, the average Bav is fast in light conditions, because it is light itself.

(undoubtedly you get a lot of boat and room for your money, though) /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Maxi's have a nice pinched hull form to help performance = less interior volume. Not sure it is the right design for you given your other requirements.

If you want a quality build allied to an excellent sailing performance the Maxi will be light years ahead of a typical French/German production cruiser. What you won't get is the same level of accommodation. You might also want to look at the Jeanneau Sunfast 35. Basically it's a tweaked up Sun Odyssey 35, with better than average sailing performance. I don't think it'll be up to the quality of the Maxi, bit it'll sail well enough. With the regards to the quality of the Bavs there's been enough stuff written here already about them without me adding to it. Suffice to say there are many thousands of satisfied owners of them so they can't be that bad. The Maxis are pricey compared to the others but you get a really good quality buid, but don't try to sleep too many on board. Good sailing performance can come at a price and in the case of the Maxi, the price is the interior space. I should know - I own one !!!!
