I have been lucky enough to pick up an almost unused Hawke House Marine forecabin mattress which was made specifically for a Jeanneau SO35.
I believe the original price is about a thousand pounds, I paid much much less.

Just to record that we slept on this engineering delight on Saturday night, and SWMBO declares this to be...... the best idea you ever had. Well, this is praise indeed.

It is very comfortable, and has a high pocket spring content, and a memory foam layer over the top, with a ticking layer..
The cover appears to be high quality calico or similar, and the underside is a breathable type vented vinyl with a zip, velcro removeable cover.
Lynn made a duvet top sheet cover to stop any staining from leaving forehatch open in rain, (oops), and a stretch elastic sheet from a king size sheet set.
The whole thing is about 9 inches deep, and is as good a quality as a decent high street name like Relyon.

It has absolutely transformed the sleeping experience, and is well recommended for those with back troubles such as mine and SWMBO. So, not a waste of money.

I know this will seem impossibly decadent to many of us, but if you have the money, just do it.

I can empathise with this sentiment, we achieved a very positive outcome with a memory foam mattress topper, about 3" thick, on top of our main bunk in the aft cabin. It works wonderfully and has transformed kipping on the boat. No back problems since we started sleeping on it. Having put up with the discomfort of a standard yacht mattress for several years I feel slightly silly not to have sorted it before.

Hawke House Marine do both the full mattress and the memory foam. Its best to have your back to he foam pile when they give you the price. Smelling salts will bring you round just in time to enter your PIN number.

As I said, I am now convinced.

We bought one from Marine Business in Ringwood, Hampshire. Spent four months sleeping on it last summer and it was so good that we haven't had a good nights sleep since we got back! 01425 480605. I bought the boat, her in training bought the mattress; you can see where our respective priorities lie. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I attacked the bed rather than the mattress. It was a cheaper option than a sprung foam mattress.

Transformed our bunk so that I now sleep better on the boat than home!

For the other cheapskates, like me, a memory foam mattress topper can be obtained from ebay for about£70. Will need a bit of trimming to fit, but works well for us.
