Hello everyone,

I am new to all this so please forgive me if I come across a complete 'Thicko'
We are in the process of re-fitting our first boat which is a Matilda 20 built by Ouyang Boat Works of Whitby, Ontario, (which went out of business in the late 1980's.) Unfortunatly I am a disabled sailor and we cannot take the boat out of the water at this present time.. It is moored on tidal Mud Flats on the river Clone in Essex. We need to get rid of the old Lavac toilet which was installed without
sea-cocks when the boat was first built. Has anyone any ideas on how to go about this without sinking the boat?. We would also like to hear from anyone who knows of the Matilda 20 so that we can swap a few ideas. There is a Website and Forum for Matildas but for some reason it seems to be dormant at the moment.

Many thanks,

Paul

Can you take the boat to a reasonable scrubbing grid to dry out for a tide? If so you will need to disconnect the offending item and fit sea cocks within one tide (you should have around 3-4 hours no problem). I'm assuming you have holes already - you will need to check the diameter against the size of available seacocks. You'll aslo need to check carefully the sealing material you use - it will either need to cure very rapidly or be happy going off under water. As soon as you have seacocks fitted you can install a new toilet at your leisure.

This becomes more problematic if you have to start drilling holes etc as you'll need power.

Thanks Tony,

The old Lavac is installed with through holes without the use of Sea-Cocks. I will not require the original fittings so I will be looking at Blocking the Holes off. The new loo is going to be the less complicated 'Potty' Type.

Once again thanks for your kind help

Paul

I'd add to Tony's post that it might be useful to have something like a wooden plug at hand in case the job takes longer than the tide. My experience of any bit of marine engineering is that it always takes longer than you reckon.

Best of luck.

hi mayfox,
just thought id let you know, i had a matilda 20 as my first yacht, great little boats really beamy and heavily built that will look after you in a chop, and sail nicely too.
it was responsible for me becoming hooked on sailing and i eventually sold it for bigger but she is still sailing around in regular use.

Hi Tyce

Wonder what your boat was called

My first boat was also a Matilda and we sold her in 1992 to someone who was going to take her to, I believe, Maryport.

Clearly these boats carry an infection because I am still sailing, but in a bigger boat.

Hi Mayfox, How about filling in your profile a little 'cos if you are on the Colne, there's quite a lot of local knowledge & assistance available......either @ W.S.C. or A.C.B.O.A....regards & Welcome Tony W.

Don't think so.

Mine originally had orange hull (!) I painted her baltic blue

Was called Sentosa II and SWMBO wanted to change it so she was called Jorien when we sold her.

She had a Merc long shaft, I think 7.5HP. The only O/B I've ever liked

Hi Tyce,

Thanks for the reply. Our Matilda is our first boat moored at Rowhedge. She has a lot of smoked damage owing to a flare in the cabin. We are pleased with her and feel very safe when on board. We are hoping to get a lot more knowledge before taking her out and will be looking for a local school.

Good luck

Paul
