Don't know for sure but probably original, hence 35 years old, and still in first class order throughout (like myself - apart from the age) along with the other half-dozen examples aboard.

Could such a machine be improved or is it practically perfect in every way?

I wouldn't use one 'twixt anchor and cable either - or on a mooring warp - or for towing or.. but it surely has it's uses and could it be bettered for such do you think?

I have them on my halyards, also original and 35 + years old. I'm sure technically they could be improved on, but not when you consider the 70% margins the retailer, wholesaler and manufacturer all have to add on to their products now.

They were probably hand cast in virgin's @rses, which would bring the price up to well over £1000 each.

How about these for a real value ?

Our Part Number: BBTYT8

Many years of design and rigorous testing created a series of shackles that provide a standard of quality previously unavailable to the sailing community. Tylaska shackles were meticulously designed and optimized using the latest finite element CAD software. Our patented mathematical curvature of the release mechanism allows our shackles to be easily opened even under tremendous loads. No other snap shackle on the market today has this capability.

Tylaska T8 Snap Shackles are perfect for applications requiring high strength and light weight. They have a breaking strength of 8,000 lbs and weigh only 3.5 ounces in the standard bail configuration. Ideal for the 30 to 40 foot sailboat.

Our precision engineered shackles are constructed in-house by our staff to near-military specifications, with every shackle individually tested prior to shipping All of our products are 100% made in the USA to the highest standards of quality, durability, and corrosion resistance. Computer optimized 15-5 PH stainless steel construction gives the Tylaska shackles the highest in strength-to-weight ratios. The standard bail configuration provides ample room for attaching a line while keeping weight and overall shackle length to a minimum. Standard bails are ideal for halyards and sheets.
