Old news perhaps for some, but just in case you haven't heard, they have a new Manager Damir Terzic, and Head chef Adam Duebel, ex Savoy chef, I've been assured they have lifted their game to a level in keeping with the location.

It's always been a beautiful place to visit, His Lordship has not over exploited the river, the charges for mooring is in line with most other places, but in the past the MBH always seemed to disappoint, poor service, poor food (IMHO). just thought I'd sound you guys out, as to who's been there this season? and whadyathinkofit?

My interest is non commercial, just that I live in this part of the New Forest, and have said for a long time if only they could get their act somewhere near that of the Folly for service and quality.

My first visit of this year to the Beaulieu river was last Saturday. I didn't darken the door of the Master Builder's but, instead, picked up a buoy and enjoyed a cheese* and pickle sandwich of my own devising and a bottle of Signor Pironi's finest beer. :D

* It was Red Leicester

Austerity? I had chocolate digestives as well, you know. :D

Actually I really can't think of anything I'd prefer to do (and am still capable of doing!) than sit and watch the world go by in a beautiful location after batting through a bit of a breeze and taking a short cut over the spit to get into the river, with a bottle of beer and one of my kids for company.

Had lunch there over half term week , food was excellent and the price matched the quality and position. However the place was empty, I'm sure punters are put off from a 1st visit by the gated entry to the car park.

The last time i went there it was so awful that I never went back. It had changed from a beautiful traditional English pub into something catering for a theme park

We had a run over in the RIB for lunch a couple of months ago and sat and had a fish platter, a basket of bread and a couple of "buckets" of chips with a passable bottle of house wine - not cheap but very pleasant. Opposite was a group who had bought in food from the outside BBQ - served up on paper plates complete with plastic cutlery. Guess you pay your money and take's your choice. Pleasantly surprised at the charge for a short stay in the marina - it was cheaper than the Hamble.

thanks for the update. We are off to BH tomorrow - plan to go to Master Builders for lunch... and or supper. Last time we went we had an exploding bottle of ketchup.... a truly horrible experience... be warned, do NOT shake bottles of ketchup that have been out in the sun... its very messy :eek:

I've been - about a month ago.

It was fine, bordering on quite nice. Good enough to have not really thought about it until you asked, and it has been much worse than that in the past when you couldn't help think about how grim it was!

2 sides

Surely there are 2 elements to the Master Builder; Pub and hotel/ restaurant, and both are very different.
Going back 10 years the pub was very much geared to the tourist punters (cheap and cheerful) but the restaurant was expensive and to my mind indifferent.
Hopefully the changes have rectified this.
BH was one of our favourite weekend haunts.

Buckler's Hard is a top location if you have kids - there are more crabs to be pulled up on a bit of string with bacon on it than you can shake a stick at - keeps them amused for ages!

The food at the hotel was OK but the breakfast was rubbish. For some reason SWMBO doesn't want me frying stuff up in the boat in the morning splashing fat everywhere so we have to go out :D

Galley Wench, a friend and I popped up there on May bank holiday. It was last minute, but the iffy weather put off a lot of people. We get a 50% discount at BH, which is fantastic. Popped into the hotel for dinner. Ate in the pub area and I though the food was very nice. Not cheap, but I felt it was appropriate for the quality of the food, the ambience and location.

Well I was there a week ago on charter for lunch. The service was mediocre and the food was very poor we where the only people in the resteraunt for lunch. A lunch menu with no starter! And the ham egg and chips I ordered they burnt t he ham!!! Waste or money IMHO

Did you tell them, or did you do the British thing, ate it, paid and leave?

if we don't tell them they'll never know.
