Am about to have rig removed for checkout and one of the things I need to do is repaint the mast. I would say that 80% of the existing paint is still rock hard and fine, but below bottom spreaders there are lots of dings and scratches (a well raced boat) and bubbled paint/corroded patches around the stainless fittings. Advice please on best way to proceed -
1) remove ALL paint (aargghhh) and use zinc chromate/epoxy primer/2 part polyurethane eg International Perfection...
2) Sand down mast, feather into the bare patches, treat same with zinc chromate, then overcoat with one part polyurethane eg International Brightside.
Anyone with experience in these matters? I really do not relish the thought of stripping a 16 meter mast but if it is the only way, then it is the only way... and if is the only way, what is the best kind of paint stripper to use? I have tried sanding the boom down to clear metal, and it ain't easy...
