Colvic Mast lowering advice needed
Hello everybody, I have a Colvic Atlanta 31 foot centre cockpit ketch, built in Germany and it has masts in tabernacles and a mast lowering system.
Although I have had the masts down and up again twice we very nearly came to disaster each time, mainly because of wash from boats on the river and our ignorance as to how to do it properly.
The previous owner had never lowered the masts. There are a pair stainless steel “contraptions” that are part of the standing rigging that the top shrouds attach to, in line with the pivot pin of the main mast. These will contort when lowering the mast if there is any sort of side movement of the mast as it is being lowered.
The spinnaker pole has an attachment that allows it to be attached to the front of the mast, at an angle of 90% which I assume is used as a “gin pole” but this again twitches alarmingly as we lower the mast.
In the lockers we found short stays 2 – 3 feet long with “D” shackles on – but have no idea what they are for.
I know I am missing something, and all this head scratching is wearing my hair away.
Does anyone recognise the lowering system? I can send photographs if anyone has any suggestions, Many thanks, Alan.
