In re-stepping the mast on my Sadler 26, the hook on the base plate under which the cotter pin locks on the back of the mast foot has been broken. The mast is stepped OK and with the rigging tensioned up the mast appears perfectly secure. The mast foot is not free to move because it postively engages on the base plate but the pin must be there for a purpose. How important is this locking pin? Advice please.

I am guessing here that the hook and pin are to keep the aft end of the base attached when the mast is lowered backwards. If you do lower backwards the loads on the base trying to push the base forward or when lower trying to lift the base can be large.
so don't try to lower the mast unless you are ready for movement out of control forward or up. Obviously if you use a crane no problem.
If you never intend to lower the mast then you can disregard the damage to the hook.Once the mast is vertical most load is straight down. With only simple restraint so hold it in place froe and aft and sideways.

Thanks for the reply - I assumed that this was the case but wanted reassurance that the rig would be safe.
