Mast climbing devices

We have just arrived back home after 5 weeks cruising the Greek Ionian and whilst perusing the forum I noticed the subject of mast climbing had been discussed some time ago. I bought a get up mast ladder from Hurst marine and took it out with us . It has a luff rope which is pulled up the spare groove in the mast (in mast reefing),using a spare halyard. As\far as I am concerned it is the best thing since sliced bread.It is a doddle to climb and even without a safety harness I felt completely confident about using it,although anyone with a poor head for heights should consider a harness.It paid for itself after two sessions and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering it.It takes up little space when not in use and is made of good strong webbing so should last forever.

What are you doing back here?

When we met in Kalamos last month, I thought you said that you stayed out there for the whole summer?
Just looked at your profile and noted an interest in MGs. Had we got on to that one we'd both still be there!

Anyway, webbing ladders; when i had one - left it on the last boat - i found that after climbing about six or so loops the crushing of the webbing into the sides of the feet made it far too tiring to use. Wearing shoes made the loops difficult to access. Does yours have some sort of stiffening to hold the loops open?

Unfortunately Steve I am now back home..still have to earn a living between times.but will be back in September when the crowds have gone. Re the webbing..yes I needed shoes with stiff soles,but old deckies were ok,the webbing on the base is very stiff and is quite comfy.
Re Old MG's I have a '51 TD which I restored and use frequently,also rebuilt a 72 GT which I sold just prior to coming out in May.Now looking for another winter project as boat is too big to bring home on plane!

CLIMBING A MAST

1) Stand on the boom.

2) Grab hold of a shroud in each hand.

3) Lean back and place feet against mast.

4) Brace body, and walk/climb up mast.

Easy innit!

If this is too hard, then wrap legs around forestay and pull yourself up the forestay.

Young enough to actually be able to do this?

What a great idea Shakey..so you get to the top of the mast..then what...you are still holding on with 2 hands presumably...so how do you do anything ?

After my original post and much useful advice I purchsed a Top Climber in the States still waiting to test it out.
