Hopefully a self explanatory subject header. My mast is rather old aluminum and is looking spotty black patchy and tired. Tried pressure washer last year but didn't really lift it. Any suggestions for cleaner and application? Also, when I was pressure washing, I lost wood plugs for my teak border around my fibreglass hull. Do they come in various sizes ready made and where can I get them? I'm in Scotland.

As to the mast -duraglit or other style aluminium cleaner - just an idea but what about some of these alloy wheel cleaning potions that car shops sell ?

The plugs - I've always made my own using a plug cutter (have a look on screwfix or simerlar) from an offcut of the wood used (then almost a perfect match) but as long as simerlar should weather ok and blend in.

Always go carefully with pressure washers -they can be much more destructive then you expect -and be very aware what you are aiming them at -they are capable of removing sealant from joins !

Can't help you on the mast cleaning.
If the plugs are around 1/2" measure them very accurately with a micrometer. They could be 1/2" (imperial) or 12mm (metric) there is a difference of 1/2mm and it is very annoying to have them either too loose or unable to get in.
The buy a plug cutter to suit?

Screwfix etc.......

You mean there is a difference of 0.5mm, not 1/2mm! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Blakes do a mast cleaning product for aluminium which is some kind of oil.

It looks great after application but only lasts a few weeks on my old mast.

Clyde wanderer, you could be right - but isn't it six of one and half a dozen of the other ?

Sorry - how do you say that in metric ????? !!!!....
