The recession is hitting us all; well almost all of us. Marina fees are either going up or stay at the same level; there must be a lot of fellow yachties who are now looking for alternative moorings such as swinging moorings.

However, the majority of swinging mooring are tidal and therefore much less suitable for fin keel boats.

So, is there a mass exodus from marinas? what are the options for the fin keelers? do you have a problem?

I ducked out of marinas in 2008 when my work phone stopped ringing with new enquires for about 6 months.

Luckily I located a deep water swinging mooring (which took some persistence) and would now not go back to a marina.

A visit to a marina is more fun as a result, the joys of electricity! My ideal mooring arrangement is a mooring buoy with a 16 amp shore power socket..... can't be that difficult.....

Asked Jon Ede the MD of MDL at SIBS what occupancy was like, and he quite candidly told me that they had about 200 berths unallocated across the group, whats that, 10 berths per marina? That is down from a waiting list of similar numbers about 5 years ago. But lets not forget, there has been a mass migration of used boats sold from the UK into Europe since 2008.

Add to that the decimation of new boat sales and the full hard standings of laid up or for sail boats. Davis's yard in Poole has a more or less permanent 50 boats on the hard in the summer. We were looking at some photos of the same yard in the summer of 1992 and there were about 10 boats in the yard.
