Right, my understanding of proper boot top paint is that it's a halfway house between something like Toplac for the topsides and normal antifouling. The existing boot top on my boat does tend to end up quite fouled and does not like being scrubbed.

So International and Hempel offer dedicated scrubbable boot top paint, however only in a limited range of colours. Does anyone know if you can get it in a burgundy/maroon colour anywhere?

I guess worst case scenario I could always just add a bit of black paint to one of their Ferrari red colours...any thoughts?

Thanks

Or, go to a car place and get the stick on tape. Boat places also do this tape (cove line) but won't have as many colours. This will also give you a much easier line to follow when painting in future.

Edit to add - I'm pretty sure boot top paint is just a smaller tin of topside paint rather than any kind of antifoul

If it's above the water don't use antifoul, the previous owner of my boat had done this and everytime you touched it with a dinghy or tried to clean it it smeared all over the topsides. I removed it and painted over with Brightside. Did it 2 years ago and it still looks good.

Yep. Just use gloss enamel.
Don't overlap it over the antifoul. That will let water wick up behind the gloss. Overlap the antifoul over the bottom edge of the gloss.

this means you can choose exactly the shade of maroon you want.
I love maroon paint.
The drawback is that is a softer paint than blue or green paint (honest).

I used Crown maroon non drip gloss for the boot topping on my Beneteau 311 - Worked fine
but i had to remove all the pillar box red international boot top first. The Crown was much easier to apply than the international.

Guys, the issue is that standard enamel fouls in the comparatively choppy waters of my swinging mooring, and scrubbing is a pain. Proper boot top paint self polishes, but it is not available from Hempel in the right colour, hence me looking at possibly darkening some red down. Car tape will be totally unsuitable on this application...it's boot topping, not cove line.

So I was just trying to see if there's any manufacturer I'd overlooked, or if any niche supplier can mix to the desired colour.

That is exactly why I did it, in gloss.

Choose the brand and range of paint that you want to use. Ie the one that offers the degree of scrubbability that you require. ( Trilux is a bit soft IMHO)

Then choose a colour from those offered.

For this use that is far more logical than deciding on a colour and then trying to find a paint available in that colour.

If you must make a maroon start with red, add up to about 25% blue ( less if its a dark blue) then a small amount of yellow, but its only a boat bottom!

As the boot top, name on the transom, spray hood, dodgers, stack pack, fender socks, and cockpit rope tail bags are all matching, I'm quite keen not to change the colour of the boot top!

Will give Vic's formula a go...thanks.

On reflection yellow might be a problem. No more likely to find yellow antifouling than maroon !

So use less blue but add some green .

Horrible feeling it going to end up too dark.

International Bounty Red - with hot chilli powder mixed in??..........

Although I have used Blakes boot topping paint for a long time I had trouble with the last tin I used. (True Blue)

I don't know if the problem has been sorted out since then.

Yes pretty sure there was a post saying that Blakes had acknowledged that there was a problem ( just with blue IIRC) and that it had been sorted.

It may even have been mentioned on their own website.
