Just heard from a friend, Marlow Ropes have gone bust. They where his biggest customer, he will take a hit.

Years ago my father in law used to work for British Ropes in Doncaster, they are no more. So now with Marlow gone, guess ALL the marine rope will have to be Liros.

Another blow for British industry.

If so, that's very sad. Marlow provided much needed employment in a rural part of East Sussex.

I did some consultancy work for them twenty years ago when they were taken over, and I had much affection for the product. Even in those days one could see the challenges they faced. It was just not economic to make rope over here, and this trend has had its dismal result.

Oh blimey, I always use their stuff too. That's a real blow, especially to your friend, and I suppose we'll be flooded with even more foreign products to fill the gap. Any chance of the administrators keepng it going?

Yes, and why do the banks (assume) pull the plug on a company so close to Christmas, they know what personnal damage it will inflict on the workforce?

But... and I\'m not condoning...

..it but if they are allowed to carry on running up the debt then you and I will be paid less interest on our savings for retirement and be charged more for our credit.

Makes you wonder though how we "add value" anymore in this country. Gordie has upped the national debt (very quietly) over the last six months when he made such a song and dance act about reducing it six years ago.

With a risk of a riot from our friends from north of the border, and I'd like to make it very clear I have no problem with the Scots, several of my best friends are from Scotland ( Highland Park, Glenmorangie, etc etc)....

But why is it that half the goverment is made up of Scotsmen?

Re: But... and I\'m not condoning...

...back to the point in hand, it's a real shame but with these things it's never over until it well it's officially over.

Yet the point is valid regarding British Industry, and (what the hell lets have a riot) with so many companies off-shoring due to cheap labour, ET AL and the government (which ever party, it's taken years to get here) shouting economy where are we going in the long term.

Will the last person SAILING out of the UK please turn off the lights.

This actually happened many weeks(not days) ago as I was trying to source a particular spec of rope unsuccessfully.

The good news is (reputedly) that the marine ropes division was the profitable element so hopefully the administrator will be able to sell it off as a going concern

Having got rid of half the pillocks now, when we get independence we`ll only have to get rid of the other half then /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Aren't English Braids still going at Malvern? You may be able to buy British still, if you're prepared to pay the price and not go for the cheapest. Ask about!

Re: But... and I\'m not condoning...

the labour lot are all scots cos that's where all the safe seats are. Not so good in England where actually 60,000 more people voted tory than labour. Democracy, see. er...

Re: But... and I\'m not condoning...

Get the MPs you vote for. How else?

There are a number of Scots living in English constituencies. And there are a number of English living in Scottish constituencies. Quite simple really.

Worth a visit to their site to download the PDF on Splicing while it's still running. a few other interesting documents there. (Marlow) It is a shame, but I think we have to face facts that in the current economic world climate, if it can be made cheaper abroad, it will be, and as someone who already spends way to much on boat kit, I will always be looking for the cheapest supplier of quality products. I hope the staff find good jobs soon.

Particularly relevant in this part of the world as today we heard the minister Adam Ingram announcing - in a broad scots accent - that the JCA is to be based at Lossiemouth so St Mawgan is now redundant and they're taking away air traffic control and fire services from Cornwall's only major airport.
